Red Bull Racing advisor Helmut Marko has broken his silence following the accusations levelled against F1 team boss Christian Horner.

As anticipated, Marko refrained from disclosing any details regarding the ongoing inquiry.

Last week, it emerged that Horner was under scrutiny after a female staff member accused him of ‘controlling behaviour’.

Horner, spouse of former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell, has vehemently denied the allegations and underwent an eight-hour interrogation by an independent lawyer last Friday.

Red Bull had hoped to settle the matter before the unveiling of their 2024 car on Thursday evening, yet reports suggest the investigation could persist for several more weeks.

On Tuesday, the 50-year-old was present at Silverstone as three-time champion Max Verstappen tested his new car for the first time, engaging in conversation and laughter with team members.

Red Bull has refrained from further comment since their initial statement: ‘After being made aware of certain recent allegations, the company initiated an independent investigation.

This process, already underway, is being conducted by an external specialist barrister.

The company views these matters with utmost seriousness, and the investigation will conclude at the earliest convenience.

It would be inappropriate to comment further at this juncture.’

However, Marko, the head of the team’s driver development programme, was questioned on Wednesday about Horner’s presence at the launch.

Christian Horner is currently under investigation for alleged ‘controlling behaviour’ towards a female employee at Red Bull.

Horner denies the claims and was questioned for eight hours by an independent lawyer.

Red Bull’s investigation is ongoing and may continue beyond the start of the new F1 season.

Former F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone has refuted claims that he advised Horner to resign.

‘I cannot confirm that, nor can I offer any further comments on the matter,’ stated the 80-year-old to OE24.

‘I will refrain from speaking until the investigation concludes or produces results.

‘The process is ongoing.’

The reigning F1 champions have since confirmed that Horner will attend the launch of the RB20 at their Milton Keynes headquarters.

Supporters of Horner contend that the investigation is tied to the purported power struggle within Red Bull, in which both Horner and the contentious Marko play roles.

Amid speculations of turmoil brewing within the Red Bull Formula 1 team, Christian Horner has been cautioned that Max Verstappen may align himself with Helmut Marko, the prominent figure in the Red Bull racing setup.

The potential alliance with Marko, as suggested by former F1 driver turned pundit Ralf Schumacher, could lead to challenging times for Horner and the team.

The conjecture stems from reports by the Brazilian broadcaster Globo, which hinted at a scenario where Marko might be relinquishing his consultancy role due to apparent tensions with Red Bull’s team principal, Horner.

Globo’s coverage underscored Horner’s ongoing efforts to assert control over the Formula 1 operation as a whole within the Red Bull group.

Schumacher offered his perspective on the matter, emphasising the importance of handling this delicate situation with caution.

“Unrest leads to performance suffering.

“That’s why you should be very careful and think about what you have achieved together,” Schumacher expressed in a conversation with Sky Deutschland.

He further cautioned Horner against applying undue pressure, suggesting that it could backfire. “The connection between Dr. Marko and Verstappen should not be underestimated.

Dr. Marko promoted him very early and is always on him,” Schumacher pointed out.

He added that there were rumours that Verstappen might not tolerate Marko’s departure from Red Bull, hinting at the potential repercussions for Horner.

Schumacher’s insights also included a prediction that the ongoing issues between Horner and Marko might find resolution over time.

He conjectured that the 80-year-old Marko could be seeking to scale back his involvement in Formula 1.

“Dr. Marko will no longer want to have this stress of traveling to the racetracks around the globe forever,” Schumacher concluded, suggesting that Marko’s reduced presence might offer a path to reconciliation.

Speculation continues to mount about an internal power struggle within the Red Bull Racing team, with Ralf Schumacher suggesting that Max Verstappen would rather see Christian Horner remain in his role than Helmut Marko.

Tensions appear to be on the rise, notably sparked by Marko’s controversial remarks regarding Sergio Perez, which led to an uproar and prompted Marko’s subsequent apology.

Reports from Brazil indicated that Horner might be using this controversy as leverage to push Marko out, as the passing of Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz in 2022 left a power vacuum within the team.

Both Horner and Marko have denied any claims of a rift between them. Schumacher shared his perspective with Sky Germany, stating, “The story is that Verstappen will not tolerate Marko’s departure and would even prefer Horner to leave the team.

“Helmut chose Horner to lead Red Bull long before he entered Formula 1, and one has always been on the other’s side.”

Marko, often seen as a guiding figure for Verstappen, played a pivotal role in bringing the two-time champion to Red Bull.

It was Marko who was impressed by Verstappen’s extraordinary performance in the 2014 European F3 Norisring round, where he secured three race wins and two poles.

This led Marko to contact Verstappen’s father, Jos, with the proposal of placing the then-16-year-old driver in Formula 1 for the following season.

The apparent discord between Marko and Horner goes beyond the recent controversy related to Perez.

Marko is believed to have favoured Nyck de Vries at AlphaTauri and advocated for replacing Perez, while Horner held differing views.

Additionally, Marko supported a strong relationship with Honda, including backing Yuki Tsunoda at AlphaTauri, as the team prepares for their engine split in 2026.

However, Horner delayed confirming Tsunoda’s extension for 2024.

Horner also appeared to lean away from the sale of AlphaTauri, instead favoring consolidation of operations closer to Red Bull.

READ: Mick Schumacher takes major step to racing return

Schumacher weighed in on this issue, stating, “The sale of AlphaTauri was avoided in Salzburg because that was one of the last wishes of the late Dietrich Mateschitz.

“When Horner said that if he has to support Red Bull more, he should have more influence, I got the feeling that he wanted to buy AlphaTauri.

“His plan was to make it as successful as possible to sell it in the future for a good price.”

Amid growing speculation and rumours of political unrest at Red Bull, Helmut Marko, the prominent Austrian consultant, has unequivocally addressed the uncertainties surrounding his future in Formula 1.

Reports, notably from Brazilian broadcaster Globo, had suggested a potential shift in Marko’s role at Red Bull, citing mounting tension between him and Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner.

The Globo report even alluded to a pivotal meeting scheduled for this week that would ostensibly determine the trajectory of Marko’s involvement with Red Bull.

However, the 80-year-old Austrian has moved swiftly to counter these reports, emphasising that only he will determine when his involvement with Red Bull concludes.

Marko emphatically stated, “There is no summit this week,” during an interview with Austrian outlet Oe24.

He also clarified his contractual status, noting, “I have a contract until the end of next year.

“When and how I stop, when [it] is over, I decide, and not, for example, Mr. Horner.”

The alleged power struggle between Marko and Horner came under scrutiny, and Marko responded by acknowledging the transformative impact of Red Bull’s new leadership following the passing of Dietrich Mateschitz.

He suggested that the reconfiguration of power dynamics is a natural consequence of these changes, stating, “Through the new constellation [following the death of Dietrich Mateschitz], everything is different. People are trying to re-line the powers.”

Marko then addressed a series of swirling rumours, including speculation about Yuki Tsunoda’s future at AlphaTauri, despite the young driver holding a contract with the team.

Marko unequivocally dismissed these claims, categorising them as “all just speculations.”

Reports regarding a purported performance ultimatum given to Sergio Perez, specifying that he must secure second place in the drivers’ world championship to retain his 2024 seat, were also addressed by Marko.

He emphatically denied such ultimatums, asserting, “There is no ultimatum to Perez. I think we win too much – incredible things are put into the world.”

Marko expressed gratitude for the unwavering support from Red Bull’s star driver, Max Verstappen, stating, “On the one hand, this is very reassuring; there is still something like loyalty and appreciation.”

In a recent interview, Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko revealed how Mercedes boss Toto Wolff initially doubted the extraordinary talents of a young Max Verstappen.

Marko’s revelation provides a fascinating glimpse into Verstappen’s early days in the sport, when his potential went unrecognised by the current Mercedes CEO.

“At first, he didn’t share my enthusiasm for Max,” Marko disclosed, shedding light on the skepticism surrounding Verstappen’s abilities.

“When I first made that comparison, he said, ‘That’s enough now!’.”

Marko continued to reveal that Wolff’s perspective on Verstappen was far from enthusiastic in the initial stages of the Dutch driver’s career.

“Mr. Wolff said at the time that Verstappen’s talent was not recognisable, and he chose Esteban Ocon for the Mercedes driver program.

“His talent wasn’t apparent enough in Formula 3?” Marko mocked, adding, “Then I don’t know what exactly Toto saw.

“When I saw Max at the Norisring, it was completely clear to me that he had something special.”

Marko vividly recalled the 2014 F3 season, specifically a challenging day at Norisring, where Max Verstappen’s exceptional skills began to shine.

“These were constantly changing conditions.

“It was raining, drying out – and I think he drove an average of two seconds faster than everyone else.

“And it was clear then that this was an extraordinary talent.”

While Helmut Marko passionately believed in Verstappen’s potential, Toto Wolff’s preference leaned toward Esteban Ocon at the time.

Wolff, however, defended his decision when asked about the near miss. “I don’t think there was a lot of hype about Max back then because Max and Van Amersfoort didn’t win the championship that year. Esteban Ocon won in a more competitive car.”

Max Verstappen secured his third Formula 1 World Championship title in 2023 with a second place finish in the Sprint race at Qatar.

However, what sets Verstappen apart is his unique perspective on the sport, as he revealed that he is motivated by “fun” rather than the pursuit of titles.

Verstappen clinched the championship in Qatar’s Sprint race, with six Grand Prix events still to go, further solidifying his status as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport.

He celebrated his victory by winning the Qatar Grand Prix, reinforcing his claim as the best driver on the grid this season.

This remarkable win marked Verstappen’s 14th victory of the year, inching closer to his own record of 15 wins in a single season, set just last year.

The Dutchman’s success has raised questions about the duration of his dominance in Formula 1.

Verstappen acknowledged that it largely depends on Red Bull Racing and the quality of the car they provide.

He stated, “Depends a lot also on the package, right?

“That’s how Formula 1 works. Personally, I’m still young even though I’m already in F1 for a while.

“Yeah, definitely, I have quite a few more years in me to be able to operate at my best.”

However, Verstappen added a compelling twist, emphasising that his longevity in the sport ultimately hinges on his own desire.

He remarked, “To be honest, I think it’s more about how long I want to be here.

“That’s different.”

This statement has sparked speculation that his current contract with Red Bull Racing, extending until 2028, could potentially be his last.

When Verstappen’s sentiments were presented to Red Bull Racing’s advisor, Helmut Marko, he shed light on the driver’s perspective.

Marko asserted, “It only means that he will continue as long as he still has fun in Formula 1 and that he does not care how many titles it will ultimately be.

“When he no longer enjoys it, he will leave.

“That will be his decision.

“He is a fantastic driver, but if he is no longer motivated, there is no point in continuing.”

Looking ahead to the next season, Marko emphasised the competitive nature of Formula 1, stating, “Formula 1 is an extremely competitive environment.

“Next year will be a new season.

These comments not only drew condemnation for their xenophobic nature but also for their inaccuracy, as Mexico is geographically situated in North America.

In response to the backlash on social media and within the Formula 1 paddock, both Red Bull GmbH and Helmut Marko issued a public apology.

This statement of regret acknowledged the insensitivity of Marko’s remarks.

When questioned about the criticism directed towards Marko, Toto Wolff expressed his strong disapproval of such comments in the modern era, stating, “Such statements are insane in our time.

“They can’t be excused even by his age.

“But I think he has learned his lesson.”

Amid the ongoing controversy, the focus shifts to the Qatar Grand Prix weekend, where Max Verstappen, representing Red Bull, has the opportunity to secure his third consecutive Drivers’ Championship title during Saturday’s Sprint race.

Max Verstappen has established himself as a dominant force in Formula 1 over the past two seasons, consistently setting records and challenging for the championship.

In light of this, when asked if he would extend congratulations to Helmut Marko and the entire Red Bull team, Toto Wolff affirmed his commitment to sportsmanship.

Recent controversy surrounding Red Bull’s team advisor, Dr. Helmut Marko, and his comments about Sergio Perez has sparked debates about racism and motivation within the Formula 1 community.

While Marko faced criticism for allegedly making racially insensitive remarks about Perez, some, including well-known commentator Fernando Tornello, believe the comments were aimed at motivating the Mexican driver.

Marko’s comments suggested that Perez, being “South American,” lacked the same level of focus as Dutch and German drivers like Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel.

The controversy prompted Marko to issue an apology, addressing concerns about racism in his remarks.

Tornello, a respected figure in Mexican racing circles and a commentator for the Latin American arm of ESPN, played down the controversy, urging Mexican fans to view Marko’s words with a more lenient perspective.

Tornello emphasised Marko’s reputation as a provocateur who uses provocative language to motivate drivers.

Tornello stated, “Mexican fans must accept what Helmut Marko said with a smile. You can’t just blow up everything he says.

“He’s simply a provocateur.

“What he’s really trying to do is motivate the drivers.

“He’s a hard man. He does it to poke and prod the drivers so they get more out of the car and improve in terms of determination.

“I think this is why he said that about Checo.”

Tornello went on to explain that Marko’s provocative approach is not exclusive to Perez but extends to all drivers in the Red Bull team.

He noted, “He doesn’t just do it with Checo – he’s like it with everyone.

“He just doesn’t speak badly about Verstappen because Verstappen doesn’t give him any reason.

“In fact, he must treat him (Max) like a spoiled child, so he doesn’t go somewhere else. They need to keep him there.”

Despite the scrutiny and controversy, it remains a fact that Red Bull has consistently affirmed its commitment to Perez’s signed-and-sealed contract until 2024.

Tornello praised Perez’s performance, acknowledging that while he faces tough competition in the form of Max Verstappen, Perez has shown the ability to beat his highly competitive teammate.

Tornello stated, “Verstappen is a driver who scores more than a 10, while Checo is a driver who normally does not score below an 8 or 9.

“That is very good for a driver – I think there have been drivers who have become champions with weaker performances than what Checo can do.

“It’s just that Checo is taking on an absolute animal at Red Bull.

“Beating Verstappen is almost utopia, and yet Checo has done it a few times.”

Regarding suggestions of unequal treatment within the Red Bull team, Tornello pointed out that each driver has different preferences, and the team adjusts the car to cater to the driver they believe will perform better, which, in this case, is Verstappen.

With six races left in the 2023 season, including Perez’s home race in Mexico, the Mexican driver expressed his determination to win in front of his home crowd, emphasising his desire to achieve victory for himself.

Perez declared, “I’m going to do everything I can to win in Mexico.

Even if Mexican driver Perez manages to secure victory in the sprint race in Qatar next Saturday, Verstappen’s path to the championship remains clear.

A mere sixth-place finish for Verstappen would suffice to clinch the coveted drivers’ title.

Furthermore, should Verstappen fall short of this mark on Saturday, a victory by Perez in the main race the following day would only require Max to secure an eighth-place finish.

Verstappen himself expressed his determination to seize the title opportunity, stating, “I will of course try to have it decided on Saturday.

“I think we should be good there.”

His confidence reflects the dominant form that Red Bull Racing has displayed throughout the season, with only sporadic hiccups disrupting their campaign.

In contrast to the previous year when Verstappen sealed his second title in Japan, the prolonged nature of this year’s championship battle has made the Qatar Grand Prix a potential championship decider.

Max acknowledged the extended journey, remarking, “It has taken longer this year because there are so many races.

“The whole year has been very dominant, except for Singapore of course.”

With the constructors’ championship already secured by Red Bull, preparations are underway for a grand celebration in Qatar if Verstappen secures the drivers’ title as well.

Team principal Christian Horner revealed, “If we also have the drivers’ title, we will celebrate as a team.

“We had a few beers (in Japan) but the job isn’t done yet.”

Notably, Dr. Helmut Marko, the team advisor, was absent from the small celebration in Japan, having left Suzuka immediately after the race.

He explained, “We had a pretty tight schedule.

“The engineers and mechanics had to be in Tokyo at ten o’clock, so they had to get out of Suzuka by five.

“We still have some work to do before we go to Doha (Qatar) anyway.”

Marko, however, hinted at the prospect of a substantial team celebration in Qatar, acknowledging the unique challenges posed by alcohol prices in the country.

“Hopefully yes,” he quipped, “It will be an expensive party because while there is alcohol in Qatar, the prices are scary.

“We’ll have to be careful with the budget limit.”

“But Leclerc had to slow down in the race.

He added, “I believe I have understood the direction to take to exploit a little more potential from the car.”

Leclerc acknowledged Sainz’s impressive performances in recent weeks, describing him as “very, very strong.”

He highlighted the positive impact of Sainz’s form on his own development, saying, “It is great to have him in this form because it also pushes me to understand my driving style a little more and to try to adapt it to this car.”

Jos Verstappen, father of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, offered insights into the preferences of top drivers in Formula 1.

He noted that they tend to favour a strong front end, leaning towards oversteer. However, the current Ferrari appears to perform better when set up to understeer.

Leclerc expressed his discomfort with the current setup of the Ferrari, citing an excess of understeer and the challenges it presents.

He explained, “I don’t feel completely comfortable at the moment.

“There’s too much understeer for my taste, and I’m having a hard time dealing with it.

“Because of the unpredictability of the car, I can’t get the oversteer I want.”

Despite these challenges, Leclerc recognised the competitiveness of the car and the need to strike a balance in its setup.

He concluded, “It’s not that it’s a car with understeer, but you have to force it to be predictable with the setup.”
