Reigning IndyCar Champion Alex Palou has admitted that he violated his contract with McLaren, which has resulted in a $23 million lawsuit against him.

Palou admitted that he ‘renounced his contractual obligations’ in court, as he “lost trust and confidence” that the Woking-based team had the intentions on helping him get into Formula 1.

McLaren are suing Palou for the whopping figure in damages and for the amount they believe they’ll lose in sponsorship, as a result of the Spaniard dropping out of his contract.

As well as this, the fee covers the amount of money McLaren feel they’ve put into his development, a $400,000 advance on his 2024 salary and what they’ve spent shaping him to become a reserve driver.

Palou had agreed to ditch Chip Ganassi Racing for McLaren in IndyCar, with the contract also including an obligation for him to be the team’s official F1 reserve driver.

The Spanish driver has made it clear that he would love a career in F1 but decided to extend his deal with Chip Ganassi Racing by a further three years after believing that McLaren wouldn’t do what they promised him.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown was informed last August that Palou had broken his new contract and had extended his deal with Chip Ganassi Racing until the end of 2026, much to his disappointment.

Palou has now agreed that he did breach his contract in a 20-page document to the High Court of Justice, Business and Property Courts of England and Wales Commercial Court, which details why he backed out.

Palou’s statement explained that he “lost trust and confidence that [McLaren] genuinely intended to support his ambition to race in the Formula One Series and decided to continue racing with CGR in the Indy Car Series instead.”

The IndyCar driver ‘therefore admits that he renounced his contractual obligations’ with McLaren, adding: “the real issue between the parties is as to the quantum of any damages which the Defendants are liable to pay.”

Since losing Palou, McLaren have stressed that his departure could result in revenue losses for the team, a claim Palou’s legal team have labelled as “embarrassing”.

Palou’s statement continued: “This claim is embarrassing for want of particularity and speculative in the extreme. The performance of any team in a future Indy Car Series cannot be predicted with any degree of certainty. Driver performance is variable.”

In May 2021, Mercedes made an announcement that garnered significant attention in the motorsport world, stating that Romain Grosjean would undertake a Formula 1 test with them at Paul Ricard in the subsequent month.

For Grosjean, this opportunity was a glimmer of hope following the early end of his F1 career the year before, a conclusion precipitated by a harrowing fireball crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The incident had resulted in his car splitting in two and left him nursing burns on his hands.

However, this eagerly anticipated test had to be postponed due to changes made to the 2021 F1 calendar.

Grosjean found a new home racing full-time in IndyCar starting from the following year, and the stringent rules within the world of F1 made opportunities for testing limited.

As a result, the originally planned date for the test with Mercedes was never rescheduled.

In the interim, Romain Grosjean has been ensnared in a legal dispute with Andretti Autosport over the loss of his IndyCar seat.

Grosjean’s 2023 season began on a strong note, a marked improvement from a somewhat challenging 2022.

With two podium finishes in four races and the tantalising prospect of a victory, he had been eager to extend his partnership with Andretti beyond 2023, a move that many had anticipated.

The 37-year-old Swiss-born Frenchman took to social media to share the latest update, releasing a statement that also acknowledged his departure from the team, which had recently been rebranded as Andretti Global.

“I enjoyed working with the IndyCar team at Andretti Autosport and am proud of the successes we shared through two seasons.

“I am thankful for the many friendships developed at the highest level of American open-wheel racing.

“I had expected to continue racing with the fine people of Andretti Autosport in the coming years. I am disappointed that this expectation is not being fulfilled, and I wish Andretti team members well.

Grosjean joined Andretti in 2022, after impressing the paddock during his maiden IndyCar campaign in 2021.

2022 was another positive season for the former Haas F1 driver, who went onto start 2023 even better.

Grosjean started the most recent campaign with two P2 finishes in the opening four rounds, before going on a shocking run of results.

In the final 13 rounds of the season, Grosjean salvaged just one top-10 finish, resulting in Andretti opting not to continue working with the driver in 2024.

Grosjean is trying to find another seat on the IndyCar grid for 2024, although he’s also taking legal action against Andretti, who he expected to be racing for in the coming seasons.

Whilst he wishes the team’s employees the best for the future, he is insistent that promises made to him aren’t “being fulfilled”.

He released a full statement on Wednesday, where he revealed that he’s “commenced an arbitration proceeding in Indiana against Andretti Autosport”, in a bid to “protect my rights”.

“I enjoyed working with the IndyCar team at Andretti Autosport,” Grosjean said.

“I am proud of the successes we shared through two seasons. I am thankful for the many friendships developed at the highest level of American open-wheel racing.

“I have commenced an arbitration proceeding in Indiana against Andretti Autosport, seeking to protect my rights. I am represented by John Maley and Mark Owens of Barnes & Thornburg, LLP. Respectfully, Romain Grosjean.”

His move to IndyCar in 2021 came after he departed Haas F1 at the end of 2020 season, which he failed to take part in following his horror crash at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix.

McLaren are attempting to sue reigning IndyCar Champion Alex Palou for over $23 million, after he turned his back on a signed contract to join the Woking-based team.

Palou had been contracted to leave Chip Ganassi Racing at the end of 2023 to join the Arrows McLaren outfit for 2024, something he’s backtracked on in order to remain with his current outfit.

He is an extraordinary talent, who has won two of the last three IndyCar titles.

The Spanish driver has tested old McLaren F1 cars and has even been linked in the past to both Williams and AlphaTauri, although nothing has ever materialised.

Palou cruised to his second IndyCar crown this year by a sizeable 78 points, even with the dispute with McLaren taking place in the background.

He informed the British side during the summer that he wouldn’t be honouring his contract, something which has infuriated McLaren CEO Zak Brown.

As a result. McLaren are suing the driver for over $23 million, due to sponsorship they expected to receive with the arrival of the Spaniard.

It’s not the first contract battle he’s been involved in, after previously sorting a mediation agreement with Chip Ganassi Racing to allow him to test for McLaren in F1.

The entire situation is “sad” in the Spaniard’s eyes, as he feels like he’s “doing the right things”.

“I agree it’s sad,” Palou told NBC last month.

“I’ve always tried to be a nice person, and I always thought I was doing the right things. That’s how my family taught me how to do stuff, and then suddenly, I look like I do everything wrong. That I don’t listen. And that I just do whatever I feel on that day.”

The fee McLaren are demanding from Palou also covers part of his salary and also the money spent on preparing him for F1, with the side having already “dedicated a lot of time” to the 26-year-old.

Brown wrote a letter to the McLaren IndyCar outfit informing them of Palou’s decision and how it was “incredibly disappointing”.

“Palou has no intention of honouring [sic] his contract with Arrow McLaren for the 2024 season and beyond,” Brown wrote in a letter to Arrows McLaren Racing employees.

“This is incredibly disappointing, considering the commitment he made with us directly and publicly, and the significant investment we have put into him based on that commitment.

“We have dedicated a lot of time, money, and resources in preparing to welcome Alex into our team because we believed in him, and we were looking forward to achieving IndyCar victories with him.”

IndyCar driver Agustin Canapino has asserted that 2023 champion and former McLaren test and reserve driver Alex Palou is, in his opinion, a “more complete driver” than Formula 1 superstar Max Verstappen, citing Palou’s prowess on oval circuits as a distinguishing factor.

Max Verstappen, currently poised to secure his third consecutive F1 World Championship, has been the dominant force in Formula 1 in recent years, accumulating an impressive 13 wins in the 2023 season.

His undeniable skill and the ease with which he outpaces his competitors have solidified his reputation as one of the best drivers in the sport.

However, Canapino’s perspective diverges from the mainstream opinion.

He expressed his admiration for Alex Palou, emphasising that in his view, Palou is the “best driver in the world” or at least among the top three.

Canapino offered his viewpoint, stating, “In my opinion, Palou is more complete than Verstappen.

“What Palou does in IndyCar for me is really like being an extraterrestrial.

“But it is a very subjective opinion.

“Verstappen is another alien too.”

Canapino’s admiration for Palou is rooted in the Spanish driver’s exceptional performance in IndyCar, where he consistently excels across various types of circuits, including the demanding oval tracks.

The Argentine driver highlighted the unique challenge posed by oval racing, emphasising that it sets IndyCar drivers apart from their F1 counterparts.

He said, “Don’t let Verstappen’s followers criticise me because I have Verstappen in limbo too but, for me, the fact of racing on ovals makes IndyCar drivers different because the oval is the absolute extreme, and F1 doesn’t have that.

“That’s why, for me, a driver like Palou, who sets the standard difference in all types of circuits, in all types of disciplines, makes him an extraterrestrial.”

Canapino himself made his IndyCar debut at the beginning of the 2023 season, transitioning from Argentine touring car racing.

He was captivated by the exceptional performances of drivers like Palou, who consistently secured top-ten finishes in all 17 races on the IndyCar calendar, notching an impressive 13 top-five finishes and clinching five race victories.

Palou’s consistency and dominance allowed him to secure the championship title with a race to spare, ending the season finale title shootout drought that had persisted since 2007.

IndyCar driver Agustin Canapino believes two-time IndyCar Champion Alex Palou is the “best driver in the world”, rather than two-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen.

Palou recently claimed his second IndyCar title in three seasons following a dominant display in 2023, similar to how Verstappen has been far superior over the competition in F1.

There is no doubting that both drivers are incredible at what they do, but why does Canapino view Palou as a better driver than Verstappen.

Canapino’s interesting opinion on who the best driver in the world is comes down to the differences between IndyCar and F1 or more specifically, how F1 don’t race on ovals.

Because IndyCar race on ovals as well as traditional circuits and street tracks, Canapino believes that the reigning IndyCar Champion is “more complete” than Verstappen, who he admits is also an exceptional driver.

In Canapino’s eyes, Palou is “extraterrestrial” because he “sets the standard difference” at any venue, regardless of the style of circuit.

“Palou is outstanding because for me he is the best driver in the world, in my opinion. If he is not the best, he is among the three best,” Canapino told Fox Sports Argentina.

“In my opinion, Palou is more complete than Verstappen. What Palou does in IndyCar for me is really like being an extraterrestrial. But it is a very subjective opinion.

“That’s why, for me, a driver like Palou, who sets the standard difference in all types of circuits, in all types of disciplines, makes him an extraterrestrial.”

Despite being viewed as the best in the world by Canapino, no F1 team is currently interested in signing Spaniard.

Palou was supposed to join McLaren Racing across the pond for next season but has since pulled the plug on that deal to remain with Chip Ganassi, resulting in legal action by the Woking-based team.

He has previously tested older F1 cars for McLaren, whilst he’s also been linked in the past to both AlphaTauri and Williams.

Despite all the rumours and reports though, a switch to what is dubbed as the ‘pinnacle of motorsport’ is yet to happen for Palou.

In the midst of a remarkable IndyCar season, Alex Palou found himself at a crossroads, questioning his original plan to leave Chip Ganassi Racing for a potential opportunity with Arrow McLaren.

As he reflected on his journey, Palou shared his insights into the critical decision that ultimately shaped his career.

Palou’s season began with a bang, starting with the GMR Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 13 and culminating with the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio on July 2.

During this period, he achieved an impressive feat, winning four out of five races, including a triumphant three-race streak in Detroit, Road America, and Mid-Ohio.

This dominating performance catapulted him to the top of the 2023 NTT IndyCar Series standings, where Scott Dixon was the only contender trailing by 74 points before the Bitnile.com Grand Prix of Portland.

For Palou, the turning point came when he asked himself a crucial question prior to the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix at Nashville on August 6.

With two championships in three years and a high-performing race team, he pondered, “How could he leave?” Palou shared his thoughts, saying, “There is no hiding if you look at my interviews until 2021, I would say I was not focused on F1 at all, and that was totally true.”

However, his perspective shifted after winning the championship at the age of 24. Palou considered the idea of exploring Formula One and potentially returning to IndyCar later in his career.

He recounted, “Then it changed.

“The door opened a little bit with McLaren.

“It was amazing.

“I got to test old cars and then Practice 1 last year at COTA, and it was amazing.

“The opportunity was great, but there was nothing else there of ‘You will have a car.'”

Despite this newfound interest in Formula One, Palou acknowledged the challenges he faced at 26, stating, “Maybe if I was 20, I would have waited, but I’m not 20.

“I’m 26.

“I don’t know of anyone who waited until 30 that got into Formula One.”

In Palou’s mind, leaving Chip Ganassi Racing to join Arrow McLaren in IndyCar didn’t make sense.

While the latter team had the potential to contend for championships in the future, they had yet to secure a victory in 2023.

Palou emphasised, “You don’t get a lot of opportunities over there [in F1].

“I would not trade my seat here for anything there.

“In IndyCar, there are 27 cars, so that is double the cars.

“A lot more movement and a lot more opportunities here.”

Palou’s epiphany led to a significant change of heart.

After initially agreeing to join McLaren in 2024, he informed McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown that he would not be making the leap.

Brown, feeling betrayed, publicly disclosed the decision by sending a letter to both the McLaren Formula One team and the Arrow McLaren IndyCar team.

Reflecting on Brown’s decision to go public, Palou revealed, “I was expecting that.

“I was expecting sooner rather than later that there was going to be some movement, for sure.”

However, he refrained from delving into further details regarding his choice due to an ongoing lawsuit filed by McLaren against him in Commercial Court in the United Kingdom.

Palou expressed his desire to provide more information but was advised by his legal team to refrain from commenting until after the trial.

He said, “I would love to just tell you exactly everything.

“They said to say, ‘No comment.’

There is nothing I can say that is going to help me.”

Following these tumultuous events, Palou reunited with his agent, former IndyCar Series driver Roger Yasukawa, and severed ties with Monaco Increase Management (MIM), the company that had orchestrated his supposed F1 deal with McLaren.

Palou confirmed that he had not spoken to Zak Brown or MIM since informing McLaren of his decision on August 11.

Palou’s relationship with Chip Ganassi Racing, despite past challenges, appears to be stronger than ever.

While he acknowledges some ups and downs, he believes that it has naturally improved.

Palou said, “Chip has never been bad with me personally. Lately, he has been very good. This year has been very good.”

After securing the championship in Portland, Palou refrained from revealing his contract extension with Chip Ganassi Racing.

Instead, it was Chip Ganassi himself who confirmed the news to NBC’s Kevin Lee in victory lane.

As he celebrated his championship with his wife, Esther, and a friend in Portland, Palou enjoyed a rare drink.

He also took a moment to honour his race strategist, Chip Ganassi Racing team manager Barry Wanser, who is recovering from cancer surgery in Indianapolis.

Palou’s journey continues as he participated in a full-field test day at WeatherTech Raceway at Laguna Seca.

READ: Carlos Sainz gears up for celebrity all-star match

This opportunity allows the team to experiment with new strategies and preparations for their championship defence in 2024.

Looking ahead, Palou remains focused on his career in IndyCar, with his Formula One dreams temporarily put on hold.

As the IndyCar Series finale approaches, he anticipates a proper celebration when the checkered flag drops.

Juri Vips, the former reserve driver for Red Bull’s Formula 1 team, is set to embark on a new chapter in his racing career by making his IndyCar debut with Rahal Letterman Lanigan for the remainder of the 2023 season.

This opportunity marks Vips’ return to competitive racing after a tumultuous period that saw his contract with Red Bull terminated over a year ago due to a racist comment he made on social media.

Red Bull’s decision to sever ties with Vips came as a result of a thorough investigation into the online incident.

The official statement from the team at the time read, “Following its investigation into an online incident involving Juri Vips, Oracle Red Bull Racing has terminated Juri’s contract as its test and reserve driver.

The team do not condone any form of racism.”

This marked the end of Vips’ association with Red Bull, causing him to lose not only his position as a reserve driver but also his seat in the FIA Formula 2 Championship, which serves as the stepping stone to Formula 1.

However, Juri Vips is now poised to make a triumphant return to the racing world through the IndyCar series.

With Rahal Letterman Lanigan deciding to part ways with driver Jack Harvey, they have chosen to assess Vips’ potential during the final rounds of the current season, with an eye toward a more substantial collaboration in the upcoming year.

Vips, aged 23, has previously tested for Rahal Letterman Lanigan twice earlier in the year, which played a crucial role in securing his spot with the team.

Reflecting on the news of his IndyCar debut, Vips expressed his excitement, saying, “I haven’t been driving all year so the anticipation for this opportunity has been immense but I’m really looking forward to starting again.

“We tested together at the end of 2022 in Sebring and it seemed like we just gelled.

“I got along with everyone and I really like the atmosphere at the team.”

Bobby Rahal, co-owner of Rahal Letterman Lanigan, has earned a reputation for offering second chances to talented drivers looking to revive their careers.

Vips acknowledged this aspect, stating, “Bobby’s also one to give second chances and I’m extremely grateful that he is giving me one and I really hope to bring a good result for him, Mike [Lanigan] and the whole team.”

The sense of gratitude and determination expressed by Vips underscores his eagerness to make the most of this fresh opportunity on the IndyCar stage.

Reports suggest that McLaren is seeking between £20m – £30m in damages from Alex Palou for breaching his contract with them.

McLaren will be seeking restitution from both Palou and his racing entity ALPA Racing USA.

Palou chose to join ALPA Racing USA next year, despite having put pen to paper with McLaren.

Though the court documents have not been made public, a source has leaked details regarding the lawsuit to the press.

The damages McLaren is seeking include a salary advance paid to the Spanish driver ahead of his joining the team in 2024.

They also include various investments the F1 team had in place for his year-long placement as a test and reserve driver.

These include private test sessions and his FP1 debut at the US Grand Prix last October.

While McLaren is now the one seeking restitution against Palou, the situation was far different a year ago – when this legal tangle began.

At that time, the Spanish youngster rejected the American outfit Chip Ganassi Racing in favour of McLaren.

Chip Ganassi insisted that Palou honour his contract with them and its driver’s racing entity ALPA Racing USA.

Palou has had a change of heart and no longer wishes to join the Woking-based F1 outfit for the 2024 season.

Unlike Chip Ganassi, McLaren seemingly has no wish to fight for the services of the 26-year-old anymore.

Instead, they are focusing on securing financial reparations for the breach of contract he has incurred.

Chip Ganassi is an American businessman, former racing driver, current team owner and member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.

His team, Chip Ganassi Racing, is named after himself.

Ganassi’s teams compete in the IndyCar Series, WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, FIA World Endurance Championship, and Extreme E.

With the departure of Marcus Ericsson for rivals Andretti Autosport, Chip Ganassi Racing is in need of the talents of Alex Palou.

IndyCar championship leader Alex Palou has sensationally pulled out of a deal to join McLaren in the single-seater series next season, despite having signed a contract.

The Spaniard has reportedly told the British team that he has “no intention” of moving to McLaren in 2024, something McLaren CEO Zak Brown has labelled as “extremely disappointing”.

Palou has competed for Chip Ganassi Racing the last three seasons and had tried to force his way out of the team last year; however, he agreed to compete for the side in 2023 before moving to McLaren.

Everything has seemingly changed again though, with Associated Press reporting that the former IndyCar Champion has informed McLaren that he won’t become their driver.

Astonishingly, Palou pulled out of the signed McLaren deal without informing his management team, who have since dropped the star from their roster.

Palou is, of course, currently McLaren’s reserve driver in Formula 1, although one can only imagine that these ties will also be cut, something which is yet to be announced.

Brown wrote to the staff working for McLaren’s IndyCar team, to inform them of the shocking change of events.

“This is incredibly disappointing considering the commitment he has made to us both directly and publicly and our significant investment in him based on that commitment,” Brown wrote to his team, as reported by the Mirror.

“We dedicated a lot of time, money and resources preparing to welcome Alex into our team because we believed in him and were looking forward to IndyCar wins with him. Coming out of his team dispute last fall, we were assured by Alex of his commitment to Arrow McLaren reflected in the contract he entered into with us.”

Interestingly, Palou’s McLaren contract saga comes after Williams and AlphaTauri both held talks with the Spanish driver’s representatives.

It’s believed that the two teams held talks at “some level” in recent weeks, with many now wondering if there’s been an unknown development or if he wishes to remain with Chip Ganassi in IndyCar.

Given that he signed his McLaren contract himself though, it’s likely that this won’t be the end of the story just yet.
