Yuki Tsunoda, the Japanese Formula 1 driver, has rapidly emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in motorsport. Known for his aggressive driving style and fearless attitude on the track, Tsunoda has managed to capture the attention of fans and pundits alike since his debut in the sport in 2021.

However, like many athletes, Tsunoda’s height, net worth, and salary are also part of the conversation around his career. Let’s take a closer look at these key aspects of the young driver’s life.

How Tall is Yuki Tsunoda?

Standing at 1.59 meters (5 feet 3 inches), Yuki Tsunoda is one of the shortest drivers in Formula 1 history. This relatively small stature is not uncommon in the world of motorsport, where a more compact physique can offer certain advantages, especially in terms of weight distribution and fitting into the tight confines of a Formula 1 car.

Tsunoda’s height plays a role in helping him maintain an optimal weight, which is crucial in a sport where every kilogram counts.

Despite his shorter stature, Tsunoda has never allowed it to hinder his performance. His physical attributes, combined with his excellent driving skills, have made him a standout talent in the Formula 1 paddock. While height may be a noticeable factor when compared to other drivers, it certainly hasn’t held him back on the racetrack.

Tsunoda’s Net Worth

As of early 2025, Yuki Tsunoda’s estimated net worth is believed to be around $2 million. This figure is reflective of his relatively short time in Formula 1, but it’s important to consider that Tsunoda has been able to attract lucrative sponsorship deals and endorsements due to his popularity and potential.

Much of Tsunoda’s financial success comes from his position with AlphaTauri, the sister team of Red Bull Racing, where he has been able to showcase his talents. While his net worth might seem modest compared to some other F1 drivers, it is expected to grow steadily in the coming years. His marketability in Japan, a country with a huge motorsport following, adds an extra layer to his financial success.

In addition to his driving career, Tsunoda has been involved in various endorsement deals with global brands. His popularity in Japan has led to partnerships with companies both within and outside the automotive world, and as his career continues to develop, these deals are expected to become more significant.

Salary: How Much Does Tsunoda Earn in F1?

Yuki Tsunoda’s salary in Formula 1 is another important element of his financial portfolio. While F1 salaries are often shrouded in secrecy, various reports have estimated that Tsunoda earns a base salary of around $1.5 million annually. This is a relatively modest figure when compared to some of the sport’s top earners, but it is certainly a lucrative sum for someone in their early 20s.

In addition to his base salary, Tsunoda is likely to earn additional bonuses based on performance and other contractual incentives. For instance, drivers are typically rewarded for achieving points finishes, podiums, and overall progress in the standings. While Tsunoda has yet to claim a podium finish in Formula 1, his consistent performances have likely earned him some extra financial rewards.

The combination of his salary and endorsement deals is likely to see Tsunoda’s financial situation grow rapidly as his career progresses. Given his immense potential and the continued support from his team and sponsors, his salary is expected to increase as he proves himself on the track.

Yuki Tsunoda’s foul-mouthed radio messages have become somewhat of a regular occurance, although it’s something which has seen him attract a sizeable following.

Ever since the AlphaTauri driver was promoted from Formula 2 into Formula 1 in 2021, he’s often failed to keep his radio messages PG.

However, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has revealed the reasoning for this and where his shocking language actually came from.

Being part of the Red Bull Junior programme, Tsunoda spent time in England with the Milton Keynes-based team learning the English language.

When he first came to the UK, the Japanese driver knew very little English, as proven when he first tested an F1 car.

Hysterically, Tsunoda thought the word “motherf***er” was “just part of the English language”, as Horner hilariously discovered.

“He came over to the UK to learn English and driving for an English team that was based on the outskirts of London and they are something like out of a movie from ‘Snatch or like a Guy Ritchie movie,” Horner said on the Eff Won with DRS podcast.

“So, you know, this little Japanese guy thought that motherfer, or the word f, was just part of the English language, part of the English vocabulary.

“So he gets in a Formula One car and his very first test and he’s going ‘I’ve got understeer you motherf***er’.

“And did he really say? You know, it was hilarious.”

Tsunoda’s English has improved considerably since his first test in an F1 car, although swearing over the radio remains his trademark in many ways.

In his rookie season back in 2021, Tsunoda revealed that he actually was a fan of “bad words”, most of which he learnt whilst racing for Carlin in the 2020 Formula 2 Championship.

He’s continued to use bad language as he feels like it’s “well suited” to the job of racing in F1, although he admits that he has cut back on how often he used explicit terms.

READ: Furious Vegas residents warn F1 ‘no one gives a crap’

“I like bad words!” Tsunoda admitted on the Beyond the Grid podcast in 2021.

“So, I had a really good relationship with the Carlin mechanics also with the engineers, sometimes using bad words. And I learned from there and just I was using bad words for [the] job, you know, and also having fun and I think that’s suited well for that job.

“But yeah, as soon as I realised it when I came to Europe, I just started not really using the bad words because I was using too much bad words.”

Aston Martin’s Formula 1 team has faced a tumultuous season, dropping from second to fourth in the championship standings since the campaign’s inception.

As the team’s fortunes wane and their lead over competitors like McLaren narrows, the performance of Lance Stroll, the owner’s son, has come under scrutiny.

Stroll’s contributions have accounted for just 47 of the team’s 230 points this season, but team owner Lawrence Stroll remains supportive of his son, emphasising the challenges and misfortune that have impacted his performance.

Lawrence Stroll acknowledged that Lance began the season at a disadvantage, dealing with the significant obstacle of two broken wrists during the first half-dozen races.

Despite these challenges, Lawrence praised his son’s resilience and labeled his efforts as “heroic.”

In addition, he pointed out the unfortunate streak of bad luck that has plagued Lance’s campaign.

“He’s had nine retirements due to engine failures or a rear-wing failure at Suzuka,” Lawrence Stroll told Sky.

“Half of the races, it hasn’t been anything to do with his own abilities; he has just had a lot of bad luck, sadly.”

The growing scrutiny of Lance Stroll’s position within the Aston Martin team has been amplified by his less-than-ideal performances.

This scrutiny has been further exacerbated by the contrasting results of his teammate, Fernando Alonso, who currently sits fourth in the drivers’ championship, six places ahead of Stroll.

Recent reports have even linked Yuki Tsunoda with a potential move to Aston Martin, should Lance Stroll depart from the team.

Tsunoda, a 23-year-old driver, is highly regarded within the Formula 1 community, adding to the speculation surrounding Stroll’s future with the team.

The ongoing questions about his tenure at Aston Martin will persist if Stroll’s performance doesn’t show improvement over the five remaining races of the season.

Yuki Tsunoda has tried to silence rumours linking him with Aston Martin, as the AlphaTauri driver doesn’t want the Red Bull family to think he’s looking elsewhere.

It was announced during the recent Japanese Grand Prix that Tsunoda will remain with the Red Bull sister team in 2024, in what’ll be his fourth season for the Faenza-based team.

He’s made terrific progress in 2023 and has shown signs that he has what it takes to become a strong Formula 1 driver, something which was questioned during his outbursts last season.

It’s believed that Red Bull and AlphaTuri’s engine supplier Honda played a crucial role in Tsunoda being retained, as the Japanese manufacturer are very close to the driver.

Honda have supported Tsunoda’s motorsport career and are keen to keep the driver close to them, even when they leave the Red Bull family.

In 2026 when the new power unit regulations are introduced, Honda will leave Red Bull and join Aston Martin, making them a works outfit.

It’s understood that Honda are very keen to take Tsunoda with them to Aston Martin, resulting in the driver being linked to the Silverstone-based side.

Tsunoda is very aware of the rumours and has insisted that he’s “focused” on racing for the Red Bull family, rather than trying to make a switch to Aston Martin happen.

He’s keen for Red Bull to recognise his loyalty and not think that he’s planning his next contract, possibly for 2025.

“I don’t want Red Bull to misunderstand and think that I’m focused on signing with Aston Martin or something like that,” Tsunoda said.

“I’m an Alpha Tauri driver, I’ve been with Red Bull since I was 18, so I’m just focused on doing well at Red Bull. Not at Aston Martin.”

Should Aston Martin be interested in Tsunoda, then Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko has stressed that the side would need to come to an agreement with the energy drink company, given that the Japanese star is contracted to them.

A lot of it largely depends on whether Lance Stroll quits F1 and if Fernando Alonso is given a new deal for 2025, with Aston Martin having multiple serious decisions to make soon.

AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda has shared a candid insight into the hurdles he faced when he first attended a Formula One race, where the deafening noise made him contemplate leaving.

Tsunoda, who has since participated in 58 F1 races, debuted in Bahrain at the start of the 2021 season, but there was a time when the world of F1 left him uncertain about his career path.

His inaugural F1 experience took place at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka, where he witnessed the spectacle of the sport up close.

However, his initial impressions were far from pleasant.

Speaking at the Festival dello Sport in Trento, Tsunoda revealed his early aversion to the thunderous roar of the F1 engines.

He candidly admitted, “When for the first time my father took me to Suzuka to watch a race, I thought the noise was terrible, so much so that I said, ‘let’s go away, I can’t stand it any longer.’

“Then things change, and the noise becomes music. Incredible, right? One moment I was among the fans, and the next, I was an F1 driver; it all happened so quickly that I don’t even realize it.”

Tsunoda’s team, AlphaTauri, is one of two teams owned by Red Bull, with the other being Red Bull Racing, home to the three-time consecutive world champion, Max Verstappen.

Tsunoda revealed that Verstappen’s public image does not reflect his true personality.

He shared a humorous anecdote about how Verstappen introduced him to the pleasures of a gin and tonic, an experience he appreciates.

Tsunoda said, “Verstappen is not as he appears; he is a very nice guy.

“It was he who made me discover some excellent gin and tonic on his private jet.

“I will forever thank him for this.”

Yuki Tsunoda, originally from Japan, now resides in Italy, where AlphaTauri is based.

He expressed his fondness for the Italian way of life, especially its cuisine.

He noted that the transition to Italy was smooth and how he enjoys the local food and drinks.

Speaking to Italian fans, he added, “It was very easy to adapt here. I’m crazy about your cooking, pasta and pizza, obviously.

“I also lived in England, but there is no comparison with Italian food, not at all.

“And then I like to go out and see people drinking, or rather, I like to drink a good glass of Prosecco.

“I repeat, in England I had a different lifestyle: I always stayed at home, I played with the PlayStation.

“Better in Italy, also because I no longer burn my brain with video games.

“And I realised that I’m also doing better on the track.”

Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko has warned Aston Martin that if they’re interested in Yuki Tsunoda then they must talk to the Austrians, as the Japanese driver is “under contract”.

However, it’s been reported that Aston Martin are interested in the driver possibly for 2026, when they become a Honda works team.

Honda’s move to Aston Martin in 2026 comes as Red Bull will enter the new power unit regulations as their own powertrain supplier, with technical support from Ford.

With Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin contract expiring at the end of 2024, then Tsunoda could even complete the switch in 2025; however, Marko has stressed that for it to happen any sooner, then a deal must be struck with Red Bull.

“Tsunoda is under contract with us,” Marko told F1 Insider. “If Aston Martin were interested in him as early as next year, they would first have to come to an agreement with us.”

Tsunoda is more than aware of the speculation linking him to Aston Martin and it appears that he’s not a particular fan of it.

He’s concerned that the rumours will make Red Bull think he’s focusing on Aston Martin, something he insists isn’t true.

Tsunoda is intent on fighting for a potential future seat in the main Red Bull team and wants to be considered for a promotion in 2025, with him hoping that the Austrians consider his “future seriously”.

“I don’t want Red Bull to misunderstand something – for example, that I’m just focusing now on Aston Martin or anything,” Tsunoda said, as reported by The Mirror.

“I’m in AlphaTauri and I’ve been with Red Bull since I was 18 years old. I’m focusing on performing for Red Bull. Not for Aston Martin or something like that.

“Hopefully [Red Bull] haven’t misunderstood those things and hopefully they really consider my future seriously. If I perform better than other drivers then hopefully they consider [me] more.”

Daniel Ricciardo, known for his iconic ‘high-performance athlete’ quote, has reiterated his stance on Formula 1 drivers being considered athletes.

The debate over whether F1 drivers can be classified as athletes has lingered for decades, akin to discussions about sports such as snooker and darts.

While opinions on this matter may vary, AlphaTauri driver Ricciardo firmly asserts that he and his F1 colleagues undeniably fall into the category of athletes.

Formula 1 drivers face rigorous physical demands, requiring exceptional strength and endurance to withstand the intense heat within the cockpit and maintain control of their vehicles, hurtling at speeds exceeding 200mph.

They follow strict training regimens that encompass strength training, core conditioning, flexibility exercises, and cardiovascular workouts to meet these demands.

During an interview with crypto company OKX, Ricciardo reaffirmed his position on this matter, stating, “Misconception.

“We probably don’t have the biggest muscles in the world because we have to be very lightweight.

“I can speak from experience that I’ve jumped out of the car on several occasions, saying, ‘That was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.’

“So, athletes, baby.”

Ricciardo, who is poised to make his return at the United States Grand Prix in Austin after recovering from an injury sustained at Zandvoort, has been temporarily replaced by AlphaTauri substitute Liam Lawson.

During Ricciardo’s absence, Lawson has not only filled in capably but has occasionally outperformed Yuki Tsunoda, contributing valuable points to the team.

Despite his strong performance so far this season, Lawson won’t be in the F1 driving seat in 2024, as AlphaTauri announced it will stick with Ricciardo and Tsunoda next year.

However, with Sergio Perez’s future still in doubt after a string of disappointing outings, Lawson might be eyeing a shot at Red Bull Racing.

Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko has insisted that Aston Martin must “reach an agreement” with the Austrians next season should they want to sign Yuki Tsunoda, something which has been rumoured.

With Honda set to supply Aston Martin with powertrains in 2026, it’s been speculated that the Japanese manufacturer would like to keep Tsunoda close to them, given that they share the same nationality.

Aston Martin will become a Honda works team when the new power unit regulations are introduced, whilst Red Bull will power themselves whilst receiving technical support from Ford.

Tsunoda is contracted to the Red Bull family for 2024, with him set to compete in a fourth season for sister team AlphaTauri.

It was confirmed at the recent Japanese Grand Prix that Tsunoda would enter a fourth campaign with the Faenza-based side, having shown enough improvement in 2023.

A big question though, is what’s next for Tsunoda beyond AlphaTauri?

With Daniel Ricciardo being back in the Red Bull family and having done well since replacing Nyck de Vries at the sister team, it’s widely believed that the Australian will be chosen to replace Sergio Perez in 2025.

Likewise, it’s then expected that Liam Lawson will take Ricciardo’s spot at AlphaTauri.

The Red Bull reserve driver is even potentially an option for a seat at the Milton Keynes-based team, having done so well since filling in for the injured fan favourite.

It leaves Tsunoda with very few options to progress in the Red Bull family, a position Pierre Gasly recently found himself in.

When Gasly returned to the sister team after being dropped by Red Bull, he failed to ever return to the main fold, despite some terrific performances.

READ: Breaking: Lewis Hamilton and George Russell under post-race investigation

Ultimately, Gasly decided to leave the energy drink company and join Alpine, to help his career blossom.

With Tsunoda looking unlikely to ever be offered a seat at Red Bull, a move to Aston Martin in either 2025 or 2026 would give him a chance to progress, although the Silverstone-based team will need to speak to the Austrians first of all.

“Tsunoda is under contract with us. If Aston Martin are interested in him next year, they will have to reach an agreement with us first,” Marko told f1-insider.

McLaren’s Lando Norris has raised concerns about the lack of penalties for drivers who impede others during races and qualifying sessions, calling for stricter measures to address this issue.

Norris’s comments come in the wake of a controversial decision by the stewards in Singapore, where Max Verstappen avoided severe penalties for questionable manoeuvres during qualifying.

At the Marina Bay circuit, Max Verstappen faced scrutiny for two separate incidents during the Saturday evening session.

The first involved Verstappen blocking Yuki Tsunoda on the track, while the second incident entered on Verstappen waiting at the end of the pit lane, impeding a queue of cars trying to join the track.

Surprisingly, the stewards issued only a reprimand to Verstappen for these incidents, citing the Red Bull pitwall’s failure to inform the driver of Tsunoda’s presence as a contributing factor.

Several drivers expressed their surprise and dissatisfaction with the stewards’ decisions, highlighting the ongoing issue of consistency in Formula 1 officiating.

Lando Norris cautiously commented, “I don’t want to say too much, because I’ll just create controversy, but I think the blocking one on track was the one that should have been a penalty.

“He blocked someone. It’s not just down to the team.

“I know the team got the fine in the end of the day, but it should be down to the driver as well to look at his mirrors, and see if someone’s there.”

Norris advocated for harsher penalties to deter drivers from impeding their competitors, emphasising the disruptive impact such actions have on races and qualifying sessions.

He expressed frustration, saying, “I think there should just be harsher penalties for blocking people because so many people do it…

“Just no one seems to care enough.”

While Norris called for stricter sanctions, he also urged his fellow drivers to take more responsibility in preventing impeding situations.

He pointed out that drivers have ample time to check their mirrors during laps and suggested that this essential practice is often neglected in the sport.

Norris’s concerns were echoed by other prominent Formula 1 drivers, including Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

Hamilton emphasised the importance of ongoing dialogue between drivers and the FIA to achieve consistency in officiating, stating, “We always push and work as closely as we can with the FIA to have consistency.”

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc expressed surprise at the stewards’ leniency towards Verstappen and stressed the need for open discussions with the FIA to clarify drivers’ perspectives and enhance officiating.

As for Max Verstappen, the championship leader, he defended his actions and explained that every instance is unique.

He stated, “And the only thing I can say about Singapore is that I explained what happened when I was sitting in the car, and the information that was given to me, and that’s the only thing I can do.

“And then it’s up to the stewards to make that call.”

Yuki Tsunoda is undecided as to who he’d rather have as a team-mate at AlphaTauri next season; Daniel Ricciardo or Liam Lawson.

After initial reports stated that Tsunoda is set to be Red Bull’s reserve driver in 2024, he’s now reportedly set to be confirmed as an AlphaTauri driver once again.

An announcement regarding another new deal for Tsunoda could be made this weekend at the Japanese Grand Prix, where he’s celebrating his home race.

Whilst his recent performances haven’t been brilliant, the young driver has improved considerably in 2023, seemingly enough to convince Red Bull to give him a seat at AlphaTauri for a fourth season.

Should the latest reports be true, then it leaves just one seat at the Faenza-based outfit.

That seat is between Ricciardo and Lawson, although it’s the 34-year-old who’s tipped to take it.

Ricciardo has done well since returning from his sabbatical; however, Lawson’s performance since standing in for the injured Australian have been nothing short of exceptional.

Lawson remarkably made his first Q3 appearance last weekend at the Singapore Grand Prix before finishing the race in ninth, on just his third F1 start.

It’s clear that the Kiwi is a real star of the future, with Tsunoda seeing the benefits of having either driver alongside him.

Tsunoda was quick to note ahead of this weekend that his new deal isn’t actually confirmed yet, before admitting that AlphaTauri need to choose between Ricciardo’s vast experience or Lawson’s potential for 2024.

“It’s not confirmed,” Tsunoda said of his own future in the pre-weekend drivers’ press conference.

“I don’t know, to be honest I think both perspectives are a positive,” Tsunoda continued.

“Daniel is definitely more experienced and he showed a lot of feedback. Comparison is really good. He definitely can tell more details about how the car is behaving so I think it helps a lot for the engineers.

“And I think he likes it, especially how he talks and how he helps the development side. So if the team wants to develop the car more to be competitive, maybe Daniel.

“But on Liam, I think he showed in his first two or three races that he immediately has performance and probably he’s still progressing.

“So on the performance side, obviously I’ve just done two races with Daniel and it was not really probably the best time for AlphaTauri as well.

“But in the last two races, when Liam actually came into Formula One, the car was pretty good in Monza and Singapore. So actually, he had a good time as well but at the same time he definitely performed well.

“So I think for AlphaTauri itself, we know this is a junior team, but at the same time there’s a bit more of a risk if we think about the results in general.”

He added: “It depends on what they are thinking you know. If they want results probably for Daniel it will easier, he has more experience and maybe can extract those results. But also Liam.”
