Lance Stroll has opened up about the emotional strain of facing persistent criticism since his entry into Formula 1, revealing how he copes with pressure both on and off the track.

The Aston Martin driver, who debuted at 18 with Williams in 2017, has spent nearly a decade competing against some of F1’s best. Now 26, he continues his journey with the support of his father, Lawrence Stroll, who owns the team.

With design legend Adrian Newey joining Aston Martin and veteran Fernando Alonso still alongside him, optimism surrounds the team’s future ahead of the 2026 regulations. But for Stroll, the personal battle against external doubt has never fully subsided.

“It Bothers Me for Sure”

In an emotional conversation with Jake Humphrey during Aston Martin’s Unearth Your Greatness series, Stroll was visibly moved when asked about enduring years of harsh criticism — what Humphrey described as his “unfair share.”

After a pause, the Canadian driver admitted, “Yeah, it is for sure. I like to see it as just noise. If I buy into it, it bothers me for sure.”

He continued by explaining how he manages the mental challenges that come with life in F1: “People are going to try and bring you down and tell you that you can’t do it, but you’ve just got to stay in your lane, keep believing and keep grinding.”

Focusing on His Own World

Stroll acknowledged that criticism is inevitable in a sport that celebrates fleeting success and punishes minor failures.

“I try to live in my world and not the world, in that sense,” he said. “There’s always going to be criticism. You have a couple of good races, you’re great; you have a couple bad ones, you suck. That’s never going to change.”

He emphasized the importance of surrounding himself with people whose opinions he values: “That’s why I think being surrounded by important people and valuing the opinion of people that you care about is so important. Don’t take criticism from someone you wouldn’t take advice from.”

Staying Grounded Amid Pressure

Despite the emotional weight of public scrutiny, Stroll credited his close circle for helping him stay grounded through difficult moments.

“I’m very fortunate to have people around me who support me when I’m dwelling on what happened last weekend,” he shared. “They’re pulling my arm and saying, ‘New race, new opportunity. Let’s get it.’”

As Aston Martin prepares for the next phase of its Formula 1 journey, Stroll’s words highlight a growing awareness within the paddock about mental resilience — an issue increasingly discussed among drivers facing the spotlight of global competition.

Claire-Anne Stroll has carved out her own place in the world of business and high society.

While she is often recognized as the wife of billionaire businessman Lawrence Stroll and the mother of Formula 1 driver Lance Stroll, Claire-Anne has long established herself as a successful entrepreneur and investor.

Born in Montreal, she built a career in fashion and luxury before stepping into the global spotlight.

Her name is now regularly linked with the glamorous world of motorsport, luxury brands, and elite social circles.

Building Wealth and Influence

Estimates of Claire-Anne Stroll’s net worth place her fortune comfortably in the tens of millions of dollars.

Much of this wealth stems from her involvement in high-end fashion ventures, particularly her early stake in the luxury activewear brand Callens.

Her business acumen, combined with her husband’s multi-billion-dollar fortune, has ensured financial stability and a lifestyle that spans Europe, Canada, and the Caribbean.

The Stroll family owns multiple properties, including estates in Geneva and a private island retreat in Mustique.

These homes reflect a taste for privacy and luxury, away from the constant glare of the media.

Supporting Lance Stroll’s Racing Career

Claire-Anne’s role as a mother has also been instrumental in the rise of her son, Lance Stroll, in Formula 1.

Lance, who drives for Aston Martin, has often spoken about the importance of family support in his career.

Although much attention is placed on his father’s financial backing of the Aston Martin F1 team, those close to the family note that Claire-Anne has been equally supportive, providing stability and encouragement away from the paddock.

She is frequently seen at races, balancing a visible presence with a preference for discretion.

A Lifestyle of Luxury and Privacy

Claire-Anne is known for her understated elegance and preference for a quieter life compared to other high-profile figures.

Unlike many who embrace public attention, she maintains a private lifestyle, choosing to support her family and business interests without courting headlines.

Her wealth allows her to move seamlessly between some of the world’s most exclusive destinations, from Monaco’s yacht-lined harbor to art fairs in Switzerland.

Relationship with Lance

The bond between Claire-Anne and Lance Stroll is often described as strong and nurturing.

Friends of the family say that Lance turns to his mother for balance during the ups and downs of his Formula 1 career.

Her steady presence provides a contrast to the high-pressure world of professional motorsport, where results and scrutiny are constant.

Though much is written about Lawrence Stroll’s investments in Aston Martin, Claire-Anne’s role as a grounding influence on Lance is equally significant.

She continues to be a key figure in his personal life, offering support and perspective as he navigates the challenges of competing at the highest level.

Looking Ahead

As of September 2025, Claire-Anne Stroll remains an influential figure, both in business and as part of one of Formula 1’s most prominent families.

Her wealth, though significant, is only part of the picture.

Her enduring impact lies in her ability to combine entrepreneurial success with the quieter but equally important role of supporting her son’s career.

In the fast-paced world of motorsport and luxury, Claire-Anne continues to stand out as a figure of elegance, discretion, and influence.

Eddie Jordan is ‘absolutely certain’ that Aston Martin reserve driver Felipe Drugovich should be racing in Formula 1, and David Coulthard agrees that he ‘deserves a crack’.

The 23-year-old will spend a second successive season on the sidelines in 2024.

Drugovich is an understudy to Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll for Aston Martin after joining the team in September 2022. But he has not paired his role with a race seat in another championship.

Drugovich last turned a wheel in anger in November 2022 whilst rounding out his emphatic Formula 2 title-winning campaign.

The Brazilian obliterated the field with MP Motorsport to claim the title with 265 points. Sauber protégé Theo Pourchaire finished in second with 164.

It remains the biggest title-winning margin in Formula 2’s history since GP2 Series rebranded in 2017.

Oscar Piastri, now a Formula 1 star with McLaren, took the title in 2021 by a margin of 60.5 points.

While Pourchaire only won the title for 2023 over Frederik Vesti by 11 points.

Ferrari star Charles Leclerc won the inaugural Formula 2 title as a rookie in 2017 by a margin of 72 points.

Mercedes ace George Russell also beat McLaren driver Lando Norris for the F2 crown for 2018 as a rookie by 68 points. They were the previous-best winning margins in F2.

Drugovich also won titles in MRF Challenge Formula 2000 during 2017/18, plus Euroformula Open and the Spanish Formula 3 championships in 2018.

The Brazilian got his FIA Formula 2 title during the Maringa, Parana native’s third season in the main feeder series to Formula 1.

Yet despite his dominance of Formula 2 in 2022 with five wins – including four Feature races – Drugovich remains without a Formula 1 seat and acts as Aston Martin’s reserve driver.

But former F1 team owner Jordan is resolute that he should be on the grid as Brazil needs a star.

“There’s a young name that people probably aren’t really aware of,” Jordan told the Formula for Success podcast. “He’s Brazilian – and god knows we need a Brazilian back in Formula 1. And the interesting thing is he’s also Italian, so Italian-Brazilian.

“We have no Italian driver, so it makes all sorts of sense and that’s Felipe Drugovich. He’s won the Formula 2 championship by an absolute mile, and even a bigger gap than what Oscar did.

So, therefore, I’m absolutely certain. He’d probably even be my No1 choice.”

Jordan believes F1 needs a Brazilian driver as it is a ‘great commercial market’ and relished homegrown champions in Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna and Emerson Fittipaldi.

Yet Senna in 1991 is still the last Brazilian Formula 1 champion for his third title while racing for McLaren.

“I can’t believe there hasn’t been a potential world champion,” Jordan added. “We’ve seen [Felipe] Massa and, of course, we’ve seen [Rubens] Barrichello.

“The place was swamped at one stage by absolute brilliance. And to think that they have got no one at the moment.

“That’s who I would be going for because I think it’s a country that needs a Formula 1 driver and I think the people there would get behind him.

“So, I think there would be a budget available. And who knows, in time, I’d probably try and sell him to Ferrari.”

Fernando Alonso quickly acclimatised to life at Aston Martin a year ago, securing six podiums in the initial eight rounds.

The Spaniard consistently led the team, contributing significantly to their fifth-place finish in the Constructors’ Championship.

As the oldest driver on the grid, Alonso faced off against Red Bull early on, while Stroll familiarised himself with the team.

However, entering 2023, Stroll faced setbacks, having missed pre-season testing due to a cycling accident, necessitating surgery on his right wrist.

Throughout the season, Stroll struggled to challenge Alonso, finishing ahead of him on only four occasions, with two instances being due to Alonso’s retirement.

By the end of the season, Alonso had amassed eight podiums and 206 points, securing fourth place in the Drivers’ Championship.

In contrast, Stroll’s best performance was fourth at the Australian Grand Prix, ending the season in P11 with 74 points.

Stroll’s disappointing season saw him contribute only 26.4% of the team’s points, while Alonso accounted for 73.6%.

Acknowledging his performance gap to the seasoned Alonso, Stroll, during Aston Martin’s 2024 F1 challenger launch, admitted lacking pace in 2023.

He cited technical issues hampering his performance and hopes for better fortune in the upcoming season.

Though reluctant to attribute his challenges to luck, Stroll acknowledged the significance of misfortune and technical glitches in his campaign, affecting his competitiveness for favorable positions.

Looking ahead to 2024, Stroll expressed determination to bridge the gap with Alonso. He outlined areas for improvement and strategies to enhance competitiveness, emphasising the need for improved fortunes on the track.

Reflecting on the previous season, Stroll remained optimistic, aiming to build upon the lessons learned and elevate his performance for the upcoming challenges.

Lance Stroll has admitted that he experienced significant “bad luck” in the recently completed 2023 Formula 1 season, which left him a staggering 132 points behind teammate Fernando Alonso.

Stroll has come under fire before in F1 in regard to whether he deserves his seat on the grid, or if he’s simply benefitting from his father owning Aston Martin.

However, he’s never received as much criticism as he did in the past 12 months, to the point where it was clearly getting the better of the Canadian.

Throwing his steering wheel and pushing his personal trainer after being eliminated in Q1 at the Qatar Grand Prix was the lowest of lows for Stroll, who made countless driver errors.

The biggest driver error made came during qualifying at the Singapore Grand Prix, where he had a huge crash at the final corner, costing Aston Martin over $1 million in repairs.

His best result in 2023 was fourth at the Australian Grand Prix, despite having a car which was capable of rostrums.

Alonso proved this, as the two-time World Champion featured on the podium eight times this year.

Stroll was rarely able to match Alonso’s pace, with him having had no choice but to accept the number two driver role.

He admits himself that 2023 wasn’t good for him and that it was full of “missed opportunities”, with him pointing out multiple unfortunate incidents which occurred in the opening rounds.

“Yeah, it’s been a season with a lot of bad luck, a lot of missed opportunities. I don’t like using the words bad luck, but I think missed opportunities,” Stroll told Motorsport.com.

“But I guess it’s bad luck when I think about the failures and stuff.

“We had races like Saudi running P4, engine problem[s], Monaco [qualifying], hitting debris. Damage to the car in Q2 and starting from mid-pack in Monaco, you lose your weekend. I think back to places like Suzuka, having a good race, rear wing failure.”

The 2023 F1 season was far from “smooth sailing” for Stroll, who missed pre-season testing after requiring surgery on both of his wrists following a cycling accident.

READ: Lewis Hamilton denied Mercedes bonus

Perhaps missing testing through injury was the first indicator that it was going to be a “rollercoaster” season for the 25-year-old, who acknowledges that “sometimes it doesn’t always go your way”.

“Sometimes it goes your way a lot. And sometimes it doesn’t always go your way. And I think as long as you try and just kind of stay present and focus on one weekend at a time, all these things that kind of go wrong can change very quickly the next race, and they all go right,” Stroll added.

“It’s really about taking it one race at a time. And accepting that it can be a rollercoaster sometimes. And it’s not always smooth sailing, it’s not always a straight line, I guess that’s racing to an extent.”

Ex-Ferrari and Williams team manager Peter Windsor has urged Formula 1 owners Liberty Media to “get more behind” Aston Martin reserve driver Felipe Drugovich, who he views as a “serious” talent.

Drugovich has been Aston Martin’s reserve driver since he won the Formula 2 title in 2022 and will continue in the role next season.

There is no hiding the fact that he’s more than good enough, and fast enough, to be on the grid, something he’s proved at every opportunity Aston Martin have given him.

He actually completed the entire pre-season test ahead of the 2023 season for Aston Martin, as Lance Stroll was ruled out through injury.

At one point, it was looking like Drugovich would even race at the Bahrain Grand Prix, as Stroll’s participating was still a huge doubt.

Ultimately, Stroll did race in the season-opener, leaving Drugovich on the bench.

He has at least participated in two Free Practice 1 sessions this year, as well as in the post-season young drivers’ test at the Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi.

Despite having sat on the bench throughout 2023, his performance in FP1 at the season finale was extraordinary, as he was faster than Stroll.

Drugovich ended FP1 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in second spot and over two-tenths of a second quicker than Stroll.

This won’t have pleased Stroll’s father, Lawrence Stroll, who is the owner of the Aston Martin squad.

For the reserve driver to be quicker than one of the first-team drivers is a real problem and highlights just how good Drugovich is.

As a result, Windsor is surprised that Liberty Media haven’t tried to get Drugovich onto the grid, especially as F1 has been without a Brazilian driver since Felipe Massa retired in 2017.

“As I’ve been saying for a long time now, Felipe Drugovich is the serious business,” said Windsor on his YouTube channel.

“I’m surprised to be honest that Aston Martin gave him such a good run, first of all on the mediums and then the softs, which is basically what Lance Stroll did and he was as quick as Stroll on the mediums and quicker on the softs.

“So, that’s probably all we’re ever going to hear of Felipe Drugovich, because the point I’ve been making from day one, even though he’s paying quite a lot of money to Aston Martin for the privilege of being in this position, is that it will be incredibly annoying for the Stroll family to have this young guy coming in and showing up Lance.

READ: Sergio Perez warns F1 bosses as discontent grows

“So, what his future is there, I have no idea. I suppose if Fernando Alonso doesn’t race in 2025, looking ahead a long way, maybe he’s in the running, but even then they’re not going to want a young guy coming in and blowing away Lance, blowing away the son of the owner of the team.

“I think it’s a sad indictment actually of Formula 1 that none of the top teams saw the talent in Drugovich and put him under contract and that he was obliged really to take the only deal out there, which was to buy this position with Aston Martin, which is not right, I mean, this guy has a serious amount of talent.

“And we need a Brazilian in Formula 1 as well. I’m surprised Liberty didn’t get more behind it.”

Former Aston Martin strategy engineer turned pundit Bernie Collins believes that Lance Stroll receives a “bad rep” because his father, Lawrence Stroll, owns the Silverstone-based team; however, she admits that the Canadian has had a “poor” season.

Stroll has faced significant backlash in 2023 because he’s performed so disappointingly, despite having arguably the best car he’s had in his Formula 1 career.

He’s bucked under the pressure of having Fernando Alonso replace Sebastian Vettel, with the Spaniard having instantly become the team’s leader.

Whilst Stroll was given the benefit of the doubt at the start of 2023 after missing pre-season testing through injury, the Canadian never really got going.

Alonso constantly out-performed him throughout the season and even secured fourth in the Drivers’ Championship on 206 points.

As for Stroll, he ended the season down in 10th on just 74 points.

The AMR23 was more than good enough to get well above 100 points, as proven by Alonso who score almost three times more points than Stroll.

Stroll failed to even finish on the rostrum, something Alonso achieved eight times.

There is no hiding the fact that Stroll’s poor campaign is the reason for Aston Martin finishing fifth in the Constructors’ Championship.

Had he performed closer to Alonso, then the British side wouldn’t have been beaten by McLaren and would’ve certainly been in the fight for P2.

Due to his shocking season, several questions were asked as to whether Stroll was only being retained because his father owns the team.

Most believe that if Stroll raced for any team other than Aston Martin, he would’ve likely been shown the exit door.

Collins thinks it’s “very hard” to forget about Stroll’s father owning the team when discussing his performances this year; however, she does believe the 25-year-old needs to put in more “work” to compete with Alonso.

READ: Lewis Hamilton makes worrying admission about losing his talent

“I think Lance gets a bad rep for you know his father owning the team,” said Collins on the Beyond The Grid podcast. “And I think it’s very hard to remove that aspect when judging his performance. This year his performances have been poor, I don’t think you can argue that particularly since the car’s got worse.

“I think Checo in Force India was underrated, so when Lance wasn’t beating Checo he was underrated even more which is why there has been this drive to bring in Vettel, and now Alonso, drivers that are highly rated to get some close results.

“And I will be interested to see – I don’t think we’ve had an accurate view on him versus Alonso because of what’s happened throughout the year, he does have to work at it more than, you know, the likes of Alonso.”

Lance Stroll admitted that the car “felt like crap” on his way to securing third on the grid for Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix, marking his best qualifying performance of 2023.

Following six consecutive Q1 eliminations, Stroll’s mega performance came at the perfect time, especially as he continues to gain pressure from the media.

The Canadian will start on the second row of the grid alongside Fernando Alonso, highlighting just how quickly things can change considering that both drivers exited qualifying in Q1 in Mexico City.

Aston Martin were ultimately the real winners in qualifying, as they got both drivers out onto the circuit at exactly the right time.

The rain was at its lightest when Stroll and Alonso completed their only hot laps in Q3, before a huge storm drenched the circuit, resulting in the final four minutes of the session being cancelled.

It also kept both drivers out of trouble, something Sergio Perez found himself in after being impacted by a yellow flag caused by Oscar Piastri going off at the penultimate corner.

Stroll praised how “smart” the Silverstone-based outfit were in getting both drivers at the front of the queue and insisted that they “made our own luck” with a positive strategy.

However, he also admitted that the car still didn’t feel amazing.

“I guess time will tell if we can build on today and keep up this form in other places,” Stroll told the media, as reported by Total-Motorsport.com.

“I definitely don’t think we were lucky today, I think we made our own luck going to the front of the [Q3] queue and getting good track position.

“The weather was coming in so I think that was smart but I still really felt like crap in the car. It was really tricky in Q3, the wind changed direction so it was still really tough but I think we did a good job getting both cars, me and Fernando at the front of the queue.”

Stroll added: “The team did a good job of giving us an attempt at the front of the queue before the bad weather came in, and it looks like a lot of guys missed their laps or didn’t get them in for whatever reason so think we made our own luck today.”

Whilst Aston Martin have looked better this weekend in Interlagos compared to recent races, it was never expected that they’d lock-out the second row.

READ: Lewis Hamilton targeting 2023 Brazilian GP victory

Even Stroll admitted after the session that they’re not “third on paper” but that a “huge step” has been made since recent events in Austin and Mexico City.

“I don’t think we’re third on paper, other conditions and stuff in Q3 were a little funny and we managed to execute well, that’s for sure,” Stroll said.

“But it’s still a huge step from Mexico and Austin. We had a good race in Austin but Friday and Saturday were difficult. So today’s definitely the best quality and pace we’ve had in a long time. But we’ll see we can do in the race, the points are on Sunday.”

Despite this, his best performances of the year actually came in the opening rounds, with his highlight having been fourth at the Australian Grand Prix.

He’s not delivered anywhere near enough points though, as Fernando Alonso has featured on the podium seven times.

Stroll is responsible for just 22.5% of Aston Martin’s points this season, with Alonso having been fighting for the team himself effectively.

This has massively hurt the British team now that their pace is worsening, as McLaren have been able to overtake them with ease.

Had Stroll been nearer to Alonso all season, then McLaren would’ve had a greater number of points to make up.

With the 25-year-old having also been eliminated in Q1 in each of the past five races also, calls for him to be sacked have intensified.

Some have stated that he’s only in F1 because his father owns the team, which does put a lot of pressure of the driver’s shoulders.

His lowest point came at the Qatar Grand Prix where he pushed his personal trainer and threw his steering wheel out of the car.

It’s created tension amongst those who work for Aston Martin, although with Stroll having scored points at the United States Grand Prix, Krack has admitted that it’s taken the pressure off slightly.

“Lance got a beating from you [the press] for three or four months,” Krack told Sky Sports F1, as quoted by motorsport-total.com.

“So, it was very good that he got a good result [in Austin] and that the situation calmed down for the time being.

“The pressure is increasing internally. It’s also difficult for the team because then every little mistake is taken into account. And I’m glad that we came back a little bit for him, but also for the team, for everyone.”

Unfortunately, the pressure is very much back on after both Stroll and Alonso retired at the Mexican Grand Prix last weekend.

Not the first time in recent weeks, Lance Stroll was a man of very few words after qualifying at the Mexican Grand Prix, where he was dumped out in Q1 yet again.

Stroll’s 2023 misery continued on Saturday at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, as he once again failed to get his AMR23 out of the first part of qualifying.

The Canadian could only salvage 18th on the grid and was two-tenths off a spot in Q2, something his team-mate achieved.

Stroll was actually one of the only drivers to get a chance to improve on his lap in the closing minutes of the Q1, as Fernando Alonso brought out a lengthy yellow flag after spinning on the exit of Turn 3.

He was unable to capitalise on the opportunity though, with him now having been eliminated in Q1 for five consecutive events.

It’s a shocking run of form for Stroll, who was quick to admit that he found qualifying in Mexico City very challenging.

“Yeah really tricky,” admitted Stroll, as reported by the official F1 website.

Sunday’s race will actually take place on Stroll’s 25th birthday, with him likely wanting nothing more than strong race to kickstart his celebrations.

Aston Martin’s current poor pace will make that a real struggle though, as a top-10 finish is widely expected to be an unrealistic target.

“We’ll see what we can do,” Stroll replied, when asked whether the team can push forwards in the race.

Just like at the United States Grand Prix, it appears that Aston Martin’s new upgrades aren’t working as expected.

Fernando Alonso even started from the pits at the Circuit of the Americas so that he could remove the new parts, which Stroll is using this weekend.

They are having a similar impact on the Silverstone-based team’s performance though, with Stroll being open when admitting that the upgrades don’t appear to be working.

“It doesn’t look like it,” Stroll said.

Alonso didn’t fare much better than Stroll, as the two-time World Champion was eliminated in Q2.

The Spaniard could only salvage 13th on the grid for the race, although he is under investigation for driving too slowly in Q1.
