Russell is set to assume the mantle of the de facto number one driver as Hamilton makes his move to Ferrari next year.

“Let’s be honest, George Russell has won one Grand Prix,” Jordan remarked.

“Do I think he can be a world champion next year or the year after? I just think that Lewis had too much on him.

“When Lewis didn’t quite have the car that he wanted at the beginning of the year, George was able to drive around that.

The huge news announced this week is that Hamilton will be a Ferrari driver in 2025, with 2024 being his 12th and final campaign with Mercedes.

Hamilton has agreed a “multi-year” deal with the famous side, meaning he’ll enter the new power unit regulations in 2026 as a Ferrari driver.

He’s replacing Carlos Sainz who is now without a seat for next year, although there are plenty of seats currently available.

Very few saw the switch coming, especially as Hamilton only signed a two-year extension with Mercedes ahead of last year’s Italian Grand Prix.

It turns out though, that he has a clause in his new deal which allows him to depart at the end of the upcoming season.

Russell has also been caught off-guard by the announcement it seems, as he believed that the 103-time race winner would remain with the Silver Arrows.

“What do you think about Lewis going to Ferrari?” Channel 4 presenter Steve Jones asked Russell last year jokingly.

“That won’t happen,” insisted Russell. “You read it in The Daily Mail, was it? I don’t know what would happen before that, but… who knows.”

Whilst the move is a surprise, Hamilton was linked to Ferrari several times last season before signing his new deal, which is why Russell was asked about the Briton moving to the Italians in the first place.

When Hamilton was rumoured with a Ferrari switch last year though, both parties insisted that there was no truth in the speculation.

It’s arguably the biggest driver transfer potentially in the history of the sport or at least since the end of 2012 when Hamilton left McLaren for Mercedes.

Hamilton’s departure from the Brackley-based side at the end of the year will be an emotional one, considering he’s been tied to the German manufacturer since he was 13 years old.

For Russell, it’s possibly a chance to become Mercedes’ leader, although a lot of that seemingly depends on who team principal Toto Wolff signs to replace Hamilton.

Whilst Hamilton is only just at the start of a new two-year contract, the 39-year-old is very much in the latter stages of his career.

In just two years’ time, F1 could be preparing for a championship without the seven-time World Champion, something which last happened in 2006.

The UK has always been a powerhouse in F1, with the nation typically having a driver in the title fight every season.

There are two other British drivers currently on the F1 grid, George Russell and Lando Norris, but which of the two are more likely to be Hamilton’s heir.

It’s very difficult to say, as the pair have endured drastically different F1 journeys so far.

Starting with Russell, the King’s Lynn-born star entered F1 in 2019 – as did Norris – after winning the 2018 Formula 2 title.

He was a Mercedes junior driver at the time but wasn’t promoted straight into the Silver Arrows; instead, he entered F1 with Williams who were the slowest team on the grid.

Russell learnt the ropes of F1 at the back of the grid, before he started to develop an understanding on how to not only lead a team but how to extract the most from a package.

Despite having a poor car for three seasons, Russell progressed to Q3 on several occasions, scored regular points and even featured on the podium.

Ahead of the 2022 season, he finally got promoted to Mercedes and rewarded them for their trust that year, as he became just the third teammate of Hamilton’s to defeat him in the standings.

Russell stunned everyone in 2022, before normal service resumed last year, where Hamilton scored 59 points more than the 26-year-old.

Despite the points difference, their pace was very similar and Russell has proven that he has what it takes to claim pole and victory, something he has done for Mercedes.

The general expectation is that he will become Mercedes’ leader when Hamilton retires but will he be the UK’s lead driver?

Norris could very well take that accolade from Hamilton, as the 24-year-old has built in stature every season since joining McLaren in 2019.

Norris’ career path is very similar to Hamilton’s so far, in that the start of his career has been spent with the Woking-based team.

He is very much their lead driver and is seen by many as someone who could take the fight to Max Verstappen in 2024, although he’s yet to show if he’s got the ability to win races.

On the few occasions when he’s come close to victory, an error has often been made by Norris.

Despite this, his pace is exceptional and he’s effectively led McLaren’s rebuild, so why can’t he lead the UK in F1?

Both Russell and Norris have their strengths and weaknesses but they now have two seasons to become the best driver they can to replace Hamilton.

After finishing ahead of Hamilton in the 2022 Drivers’ Championship and becoming just the third teammate of the seven-time World Champion’s to have accomplished the feat, 2023 was largely a forgettable season for Russell.

Russell moved across without realising Hamilton was already there, before contact sent the 103-time race winner onto the grass at high-speed.

Thankfully, on that occasion, both drivers escaped unscathed.

They both escaped unscathed towards the end of the season at the Japanese Grand Prix as well, where the two drivers were battling for position.

Whilst fighting in the opening stages, Hamilton went extremely wide at Spoon Curve, sending both him and Russell off the circuit.

Again, they both escaped unscathed, although Russell did question what was going on.

Unfortunately, both drivers failed to escape unscathed on the opening lap of the Qatar Grand Prix, where contact sent Hamilton into the gravel at the first corner, where he retired from the race.

That incident was actually Hamilton’s fault but it was another example of the duo simply getting too close together.

Had the pair not collided at the first corner in Qatar, then a double-podium finish was a real possibility.

There is no hiding the fact that Russell and Hamilton’s relationship was tested during the most recent season; however, the ex-Williams driver is confident that they always “give each other enough space to fight”.

“I think also we trust one another. There may be tense [moments], it may be hard, but we trust one another,” Russell said, as reported by FormulaNerds.

“We know that we’ll give each other enough space to fight necessarily and not go beyond the limit.”

Russell added: “Obviously, Qatar was just a bit of a lap one small misjudgement. That’s another opportunity where it was another podium or even a potential victory missed.”

Following on from this blunder, his performances improved, with him having ended the season better than Hamilton.

Russell ended the 2023 season with a podium at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, giving him some confidence going into the off-season.

In general, his entire personna seemed more positive after Singapore, where he was visibly deflated.

He puts this down to a “small mentality change” and how he went about his work with the Silver Arrows.

“I think a small mentality change from my side – homework with my engineers, the things I’m focusing on with the setup of the car, the things I’m not focusing on with the setup of the car, and just probably enjoying life a bit more,” Russell said, as reported by PlanetF1.

The change in mentality came after listening to Alonso on a podcast, where the Aston Martin driver admitted that he wished he enjoyed his career more when he was younger and winning his two titles.

Russell agreed with this take and admitted that he sometimes forgets that he’s “living my dream”.

“I listened to a podcast from Fernando where he said that, if he could change one thing in his career, he wished he enjoyed the moment more often when he was younger,” Russell added.

“I think that sort of resonated with me, because, you know, I’m living my dream here. But I’m so dedicated. I feel like a true professional, I look at every single detail, and I give it my everything.

“Sometimes you forget to enjoy it. And to enjoy the moment with the people around you, enjoy the places you’re going to, and smile – not just constantly be this 120 percent serious guy focused on every single detail.

“It doesn’t mean that I’m any less professional now. But it’s just that I’m probably enjoying my life more, my surroundings, the people who I have at home, and my living situation. I’m just in a much happier place. I’m learning new things that I never would have dreamt of doing before. So just, all in all, in a good place.”

This shocked many, as the King’s Lynn-born driver became just the third teammate of Hamilton’s to finish above him in the Drivers’ Championship.

However, Hamilton comfortably had the better of the ex-Williams driver in 2023 and ended the year 59 points and five places ahead of him.

It means they enter 2024 at 1-1, increasing the stakes on being the top driver at the Brackley-based team next year.

Whilst being Mercedes’ number one driver is a target for both presumably, the real goal is to fight for the title.

For this to happen, Mercedes need their new concept to be a success, as Red Bull are likely to make further progress.

Should the Germans have a race-winning car in 2024 then it’ll open up an interesting question: which driver will come out on top?

Brundle was asked this by a fan but failed to give a definitive answer, despite Hamilton being a seven-time World Champion.

The ex-F1 driver noted that it’s difficult to answer as Russell has never had a car capable of winning the title, with it being a huge unknown on how he’d deal with that.

“I think they’re so close, those two if you look at the stats,” Brundle explained during a Sky Sports F1 Q&A session. “But George had a couple of nightmare races this year. That’s a very good question. It depends [on] if Lewis maintains his current motivation, but it’s so close to call.

“Lewis knows how to do that but George has got youth on his side. I don’t know the answer to that, but I definitely wouldn’t say, ‘Oh, Lewis without a doubt, because he’s already a seven-time champion.’ That I would absolutely not say. Until George is in a championship-winning position, we don’t know if he’s got the head to cope with it.”
