Mick Schumacher could soon return to Formula 1, as discussions with new entrant Cadillac gain momentum and generate optimism about his future in the sport.

From F1 Exit to WEC Success

After parting ways with Haas at the end of the 2022 season, Schumacher took on a reserve role at Mercedes before shifting focus in 2024 to a full-time World Endurance Championship campaign with Alpine.

His performances have been solid, but the lure of F1 remains strong. That ambition may now become reality with the Cadillac F1 team preparing for its 2026 debut.

A Strong Showing in Miami

During the Miami Grand Prix weekend, Schumacher was seen mingling in the paddock, notably alongside close friend Esteban Ocon. He also made a point of visiting his old Haas team, raising eyebrows about his presence and potential return.

According to SPORT1, a key moment came when Schumacher initiated a private conversation with F1 legend Mario Andretti—without an agent or manager present. The gesture impressed Andretti, who was reportedly “particularly impressed by the fact that the German sought the dialogue himself.”

Cadillac’s Options and Schumacher’s Chances

Cadillac team principal Graeme Lowdon has confirmed early talks with several drivers. Among them is Sergio Perez, who remains a fan favorite and strong candidate for one of the two available seats.

While no formal contracts have been signed, Schumacher’s initiative and pedigree—being the son of Michael Schumacher—make him a compelling option. He’s still facing stiff competition, but the possibility of a return is more tangible now than at any point in the past two years.

As Cadillac prepares for its 2026 entry, all eyes are on who will lead the charge behind the wheel. And Mick Schumacher just might be at the top of that list.

Esteban Ocon holds the belief that Mick Schumacher warrants another opportunity in Formula 1 following his unsuccessful two-year tenure at Haas, with speculation swirling around the prospect of the Mercedes reserve stepping in for Lewis Hamilton after his departure to Ferrari.

Schumacher struggled to progress after a moderately promising debut season in F1 in 2022, partnering Kevin Magnussen upon the Dane’s last-minute return to the team, concluding the season with less than half the points amassed by Magnussen.

Despite encountering several significant and high-profile crashes, Schumacher will now blend his testing duties with Mercedes with a full-time role at Alpine in car #36 of the World Endurance Championship after a year on the sidelines at Brackley.

“Yes,” Ocon informed the media, including Total-Motorsport.com, at Alpine’s F1 and WEC launch.

“He does deserve a place in Formula 1, that is clear. Because he’s proved, he’s Formula 3 champion, Formula 2 champion.

“He’s had two years in the back of the midfield car, you need time to prove yourself in F1, learn things and for sure he deserves a seat in F1. He’s one of the most talented drivers out there and for sure deserves it.”

Throughout his junior career, Schumacher demonstrated a tendency to excel in his second year of a series, clinching 12th place in both European F3 and F2 before securing both championships a year later. However, his initial year at Haas was largely squandered in an uncompetitive car alongside Mazepin.

He exhibited improvement alongside Magnussen in the latter half of 2022, notwithstanding a costly crash at Suzuka. Nevertheless, by that juncture, relations had already deteriorated with then-team principal Guenther Steiner.

Schumacher severed his longstanding affiliation with the Ferrari Driver Academy to join Mercedes, but his agreement with Alpine means he’s now racing for his father Michael’s third former team.

“It’s fantastic for the Alpine Endurance team first of all,” Ocon added.

“To have Mick I think he’s bringing a lot of experience, expertise and he’s obviously a very, very talented driver in general.

“And I really hope that they are going to be winning Le Mans this year, I’ll be supporting, cheering for them and I want to see Mick in Formula One in the near future again.”

Ocon expressed his desire for a driver to contemplate participating in both F1 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, asserting that it could lead to further attempts at the dual challenge in the future.

Mercedes is embarking on the quest for a replacement for Lewis Hamilton in the upcoming season, while Mick Schumacher asserts that his primary focus remains firmly on Formula 1.

Just a fortnight ago, Mercedes had been confident that their driver lineup for the 2024 and 2025 seasons was settled after re-signing Hamilton and George Russell back in August.

However, during a breakfast meeting last Wednesday, Hamilton stunned team principal Toto Wolff with the news of his departure at the end of the current season.

Subsequently, Mercedes confirmed the swirling speculation that Hamilton would be joining Ferrari for the next season under a multi-year agreement.

The scramble to fill Hamilton’s shoes has already commenced. While Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz are reportedly frontrunners, according to F1 analysts, Schumacher’s name has also emerged due to his association with Mercedes as their official reserve driver.

Schumacher, who will be competing in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine this season alongside his Mercedes commitments, acknowledges his desire to return to the F1 grid but suggests it’s still early days.

Speaking at the Alpine A524 launch, he stated, “Obviously, it kind of hit everybody as a shock – and so it did to me. But on the other hand, everybody has to do what feels right to them.

“What is going to happen in the next year or weeks is still to be revealed and also for me. So I’m just excited to see what happens to see in the future.”

He continued, “My eye is definitely still pretty much on Formula 1. Because there is now a lot of excitement in the driver market, it could be that one or two doors will open.”

When pressed about the possibility of him taking the Mercedes seat for the next year, he avoided a direct response, saying, “On that topic, I didn’t really think much.

We’re obviously here at Alpine for the launch of the car, and what’s going to come in the next, we will have to see.”

Although Schumacher’s primary aspiration was Formula 1 following his departure from Haas at the end of the 2022 season, his stint as Mercedes reserve driver has led him to consider alternative options.

He disclosed discussions with Alpine’s vice president, Bruno Famin, as early as 2023, eventually leading to his involvement in Alpine’s World Endurance Championship program for 2024.

Reflecting on his decision, Schumacher expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming season, stating, “It just really sparked that flame in me to want to go and race here, so I’m happy to be here and I guess the feeling is kind of mutual.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is confident that reserve driver Mick Schumacher will do “a perfect job” in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2024, which could spark a return to the Formula 1 grid.

Schumacher will compete for Alpine in the WEC next year, in the highly competitive Hypercar class.

The German driver will do this alongside his reserve duties for Mercedes, having done such a good job for the Brackley-based team this year.

He joined Mercedes as their reserve driver at the start of 2023 following his departure from Haas, after the American side opted against offering him a new contract.

Schumacher’s Haas deal expired at the conclusion of 2022 and whilst he scored points at the British Grand Prix and the Austrian Grand Prix, Nico Hulkenberg was given his seat for 2023.

The key reason why Schumacher wasn’t given a contract extension by Haas is because he tended to crash too often, with his big shunts in 2022 in Saudi Arabia and Monaco simply cost the Americans too much.

Some criticised Haas for letting him go, given that he demonstrated at times that he does have the talent and the speed to warrant a seat on the grid.

Wolff clearly believes in Schumacher, otherwise he presumably wouldn’t have offered him the reserve role.

Schumacher keeping the reserve role for a second season will, crucially, keep him in the F1 paddock, somewhere he must be in order to try and find a seat on the grid for 2025.

If he performs well for Alpine in the WEC then there is every chance that he could be on the 2025 F1 grid, with Wolff recognising that competing for the French manufacturer in the endurance series is a “very good opportunity for him”.

“I think him going into WEC, which is a world championship with a constructor, with Alpine, is a very good opportunity for him,” Wolff told Mercedes’ F1 2023 review show.

“I believe he’s going to do a perfect job and it keeps him sharp, racing, and maybe coming back into Formula 1.”

Schumacher received praise throughout 2023 from Wolff, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell for the number of hours he put in on the simulator, which had an instrumental impact on the team’s performance at the British GP in particular.

After losing his seat, Schumacher was offered the reserve driver role at Mercedes, which he quickly snapped up.

Unfortunately, this was his only position this year, resulting in minimal track time.

He will continue as Mercedes’ reserve driver in 2024 but he will at least be racing in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), after accepting a seat in Alpine’s Hypercar programme.

As good a seat as this is, Schumacher’s goal is to get back into F1, something Ecclestone believes is possible if he can “deliver good performances”.

Ecclestone also thinks the young German hasn’t been managed correctly so far in his career, with the ex-F1 supremo believing that Red Bull would’ve done a better job with him.

“He has to fight, he has to stick with it and show that he is still in a position to deliver good performances,” Ecclestone told Sport.de.

“The people will then find him, and he doesn’t have to find the people who offer him the opportunity to race.

“In the best-case scenario, people will see him and say: We need him. And not the other way around: he is looking for someone who will take him in because of his name.

“He should forget his name and develop as a person.

“At Red Bull, for example, he would have been better understood, they would have helped him and led him up.

As for his move to the WEC, Ecclestone thinks it’s the “best thing” for Schumacher currently, as it gives him a chance to “show himself” in a good light.

If he can perform well in the endurance series, then it could make some F1 teams consider signing the driver.

“That’s probably the only and best thing he can do at the moment,” Ecclestone admitted.

“It’s good that he can show himself, ideally with good performances. Then it could happen that those responsible in Formula 1 rethink and say: ‘Maybe we made a mistake. “We’ll try again.

“The difficult question is: How and when?”

Mercedes reserve driver Mick Schumacher is targeting to return to the Formula 1 grid in 2025, after being unsuccessful in his quest for a seat next season.

Williams was really Schumacher’s only option for 2024 given that most deals don’t expire until the end of next year; however, it was discovered fairly early in the year that the German wasn’t an option for the Grove-based side.

The British outfit have, of course, opted to retain Logan Sargeant for 2024, with Schumacher instead continuing as Mercedes’ reserve driver next year.

Schumacher will be racing elsewhere, though, as he recently signed a deal to race for Alpine’s Hypercar programme in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

He’ll be joining a six-driver roster consisting of Nicolas Lapierre, Matthieu Vaxiviere, Charles Milesi, Ferdinand Habsburg and Paul-Loup Chatin.

Whilst he’s excited to compete in the WEC, racing in F1 is still where he wants to be.

Returning in 2025 is certainly a possibility giving that over half of the drivers on the grid have just a season left on their contracts, meaning that the next installment of ‘silly season’ will be chaotic.

In order to get back onto the grid though, Schumacher knows he must “convince” teams that he deserves a seat, something he believes he will do by remaining close with Mercedes and performing well for Alpine in the WEC.

“I know I have to convince other people that I deserve a seat in Formula 1,” Schumacher told Corriere dello Sport.

“Unfortunately, a lot of contracts are multi-year deals and there’s not really a chance for 2024. It’s a bit of a difficult position to be in, but in 2025 there will be many more possibilities and we will see.

“It’s important for me not to stay out of a car for too long.

“I will keep very close links with Formula 1 and this will allow me to demonstrate to the people in F1 that I still deserve an opportunity in the top category of racing and that is where I belong.”

Schumacher has been without a seat since the end of 2022, when Haas opted not to extend his contract and instead sign Nico Hulkenberg.

He’s then been Mercedes’ reserve since the start of 2023 and has received praise for the work he’s been doing particularly in the simulator.

As widely expected ahead of their talks, Mercedes reserve driver Mick Schumacher has completed a test for Alpine in their A424 LMDh, which will compete in the Hypercar category in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) next year.

The test was conducted at Jerez, a circuit found in the south of Spain and is often used by F1 teams as a test venue.

It was confirmed by Signatech Alpine Endurance team principal Philippe Sinault that the German driver had participated in the test, in what was his first experience behind the wheel of a prototype.

“Mick has some interest in endurance and we had the opportunity to offer him a first experience in endurance,” Sinault told Sportscar365.

“[It was] his first time in the car and the first time in a prototype. It’s not a question if he’s able to drive a prototype. For sure, in terms of level, but also in terms of mind, approach and spirit.”

Whether the Mercedes reserve will race for Alpine in the Hypercar category next season is unconfirmed; however, given that he’s taken part in a test shows that there is some interest from both parties.

What this will mean for his duties with the Silver Arrows is also unknown, given that Alpine also have an F1 outfit, who were linked to the driver last season following the announcement of Fernando Alonso’s departure.

Esteban Ocon reportedly wanted the Enstone-based team to sign Schumacher, rather than Pierre Gasly.

Schumacher, of course, went onto be released by Haas at the end of the 2022 campaign, as the Americans opted to sign Nico Hulkenberg rather than give the son of Michael Schumacher a new contract.

The 24-year-old did cost Haas an incredible amount of money in repairs last season, following heavy shunts in Saudi Arabia and Monaco where his car split into two.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was very quick to snap up Schumacher after he was released by Haas, with the Austrian rating the German very highly.

Wolff, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have all been very impressed by Schumacher’s work; however, he ultimately wants to be on the F1 grid.

This isn’t set to happen until 2025 at the earliest, as Williams are expected to retain Logan Sargeant.

It appears that his best bet to return to the F1 grid will come in 2026, when Audi enter the championship at the start of the new power unit regulations.

Until then, racing for Alpine in the WEC would keep him sharp, whilst he could arguably continue with his Mercedes reserve role, given that other reserve drivers tend to race in other championships alongside their F1 duties.

Mick Schumacher is set to undergo a career-defining test as he takes the wheel of an Alpine World Endurance Championship (WEC) prototype at the Jerez circuit on Tuesday.

Following his departure from Haas after the 2022 season, Schumacher has been exploring alternate career paths, with his options to return to Formula 1 gradually diminishing.

While Schumacher initially harboured hopes of making a Formula 1 comeback, his role as a reserve driver with Mercedes throughout the season did not lead to a full-time racing seat.

This has prompted the young German to consider a “Plan B,” with rumours circulating that he has been in discussions with Alpine regarding a potential WEC drive.

Bruno Famin, the interim team boss of Alpine, confirmed the talks, stating, “It’s true that we’re talking with Mick about the possibility to race in our endurance program with the A424.

“It would be a good opportunity for both parties, I think.”

Reports from Motorsport-Magazin.com indicate that progress is being made in this direction.

Alpine has officially announced that Schumacher will test their WEC prototype, the A424, at the Jerez circuit on Tuesday.

However, it’s important to note that while this test indicates Schumacher’s potential involvement in the WEC and Le Mans next year, the final driver lineup for Alpine’s two cars in the Hypercar class is yet to be confirmed.

Should Schumacher sign with Alpine for WEC, he could also continue his role as Mercedes’ reserve driver in the coming season, effectively juggling both commitments.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has expressed his willingness to support Schumacher, stating, “Whatever program he does decide, he can stay, if it is possible from the other side, with us as a reserve driver.”

Speaking to ORF, Mick Schumacher emphasised that nothing is set in stone at this stage.

When questioned about when an official announcement could be expected, he replied, “It will probably take a little more time until then.

“But of course, I have to look at my options, and of course, there are talks.”

While he had initially aspired to make a racing grid return next year, recent developments have suggested that he might continue in his reserve role at Mercedes, concurrently participating in the World Endurance Championship with Alpine.

Two weeks ago, the 24-year-old son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher refuted claims that the Alpine-Le Mans deal had been finalised.

Schumacher now acknowledges that work is ongoing behind the scenes to shape his future endeavours.

“In the background, there’s work on my own plans for next year,” Schumacher disclosed.

“These are still evolving, and it’s just a matter of trying to understand exactly which direction we can go in, how to fit in the commitments and things like that.

“It just takes time,” he explained, offering insights into the complexity of decision-making at this juncture.

Moreover, Schumacher hinted that the prospective Alpine deal would not clash with his reserve role at Mercedes for the 2024 season.

He spoke of his curiosity about getting to know the Mercedes team better and integrating himself within it.

“It’s been good to get to know the people that worked with my dad and all the new colleagues too,” Schumacher said, underscoring the importance of building relationships within the team.

Schumacher reaffirmed his commitment to Mercedes for the remainder of the current season.

He disclosed his intention to be present at every race, prepared to step in if Lewis Hamilton or George Russell were unable to continue.

Additionally, he remains actively involved in the development of the car for the 2024 season.

“The development of W15 started quite a while ago,” Schumacher revealed, shedding light on the team’s forward-looking efforts.

Mick Schumacher, who was once touted as the future of German motorsport in Formula 1, is currently engaged in negotiations with Alpine regarding a potential role within their FIA World Endurance Championships (WEC) team for the 2024 season, according to a report by The Independent.

Just a few years ago, Schumacher’s meteoric rise in motorsport was evident when he clinched the 2020 Formula 2 championship, an achievement that paved the way for his entry into Formula 1 with the Haas team in 2021.

However, his debut season with Haas was fraught with challenges as the team had one of the least competitive cars on the grid, resulting in Schumacher failing to secure a single championship point despite delivering promising performances.

It wasn’t until the 2022 season, during the Silverstone Grand Prix, that Schumacher finally earned his first Formula 1 point.

He followed up this success with an impressive career-best sixth-place finish in Austria.

Nevertheless, Kevin Magnussen’s stint as a substitute driver for Haas demonstrated what an experienced driver could achieve with the same car, leading to Schumacher being replaced by Nico Hulkenberg.

Schumacher subsequently took on a role as a test driver for the Mercedes Formula 1 team, but his career may be set to take another turn.

Alpine, the French manufacturer, is now in discussions with Mick Schumacher regarding the possibility of him racing for their team in the 2024 season.

However, this venture would not see Schumacher return to Formula 1; instead, he would be participating in the FIA World Endurance Championships (WEC), with Alpine fielding two cars in the series.

Addressing the potential collaboration with Mick Schumacher, Alpine’s interim boss, Bruno Famin, stated:

“It’s true that we are talking with Mick about the possibility to race in our endurance programme with the A424.

“It would be a good opportunity for both parties.

“But for the time being, we are just talking, and hopefully, we will organise a test soon.”

Sebastian Vettel, a four-time Formula 1 World Champion and one of Mick Schumacher’s staunch supporters, has emphasised the importance of the 24-year-old driver’s return to the Formula 1 grid.

Germany, once known for consistently producing world-class racing talent, has seen a decline in representation on the Formula 1 grid, with Nico Hulkenberg, who turned 36 in August, being the sole German driver.

The absence of German drivers extends to lower tiers of motorsport, with no Germans currently competing in Formula 2. Oliver Goethe and Sophia Florsch are the only German entrants in Formula 3.
