Ferrari’s aerodynamics chief Enrico Cardlie has revealed that Red Bull “introduced a new technology” in 2023, which may have played a role in the RB19 being so dominant.

Red Bull’s 2023 challenger will go down in Formula 1 history as one of the greatest cars of all-time, with the Milton Keynes-based team having won 21 of the 22 completed races in the most recent campaign.

The 2023 Singapore Grand Prix is the only event neither Max Verstappen or Sergio Perez claimed victory at, as Carlos Sainz was the winner.

It means Ferrari’s consistent driver was the only non-Red Bull victor in 2023, something which is remarkable to say.

With the exception of the Singapore GP, the RB19 just seemed to perform to a staggering level at every venue, no matter whether it was a high, medium or low-downforce circuit.

Verstappen in particular was magical behind the wheel of his #1 plate RB19, with 19 of the team’s 21 wins having come courtesy of himself.

The Dutchman smashed several records on his way to a third consecutive Drivers’ Championship, leaving many with the feeling that Verstappen could remain unstoppable until the new power unit regulations are introduced in 2026.

In general, no outfit has been able to consistently take the fight to Red Bull since the current aerodynamic regulations were introduced at the start of 2022, as they’ve just understood the regs significantly better.

Red Bull’s biggest strength is that they entered the new regs in 2022 with an exceptional base package and have simply continued to develop it.

One theory Auto Motor und Sport had is that some teams are reduced the size of their brake callipers to try and gain some time back on Red Bull, something Cardile disagreed with.

However, Cardile did admit that Red Bull ran something brand-new in 2023, which is different to what Ferrari and Mercedes have used “for several years”

“I don’t think the other teams have smaller calipers,” Cardile told AMuS. “This is a so-called open-source component. If a team changes something, they have to share the CAD design plans with everyone else. We can see them.

“Of course, we also study photos. As far as I can tell, the size of the brake calipers is almost the same for all teams.

“Red Bull has introduced a new technology this year that differs from what Mercedes and we have been using for several years. It may be that these new calipers bring a weight advantage. You have to look at that.

“But whether the part is a millimetre bigger or smaller makes no difference. Red Bull is the best example of the fact that there is an all-rounder. You just have to work hard and have the right goals.”

The 2022 season was full of highs and lows for Ferrari, with the team taking huge strides forwards under the new regulations but eventually falling short of the championship.

The team started the season with the fastest car on the grid and built up a strong lead in both championships but a number of reliability issues and strategic errors eventually saw the Scuderia fall away from the title.

2023 has started in similar fashion for Ferrari, with Red Bull looking head and shoulders above their rival at the opening race weekend of the season in Bahrain.

Ferrari looked set for a podium with Charles Leclerc running in P3 but their reliability issues once again hurt the team as the Monegasque driver was forced to retire from the race with a power unit issue.

With Red Bull looking vastly superior to Ferrari already this season, some fans are already beginning to write off the Scuderia, suggesting that the championship is already Red Bull’s despite only being a race into the season.

New team principal Fred Vasseur would not have wanted to start his rein in such a disappointing manner and is now reportedly eyeing a number of changes behind the scenes.

It has been reported that Enrico Cardile’s future is currently uncertain, with the head of chassis potentially on the verge of leaving the Scuderia.

Assistant team principal Laurent Mekies is also eyeing an exit from Ferrari according to reports, with Vasseur looking to completely change the team from last season.

Ferrari will be looking to improve their form as quickly as possible, with their star driver Charles Leclerc reportedly considering whether to leave the team upon the expiration of his contract next season.

The first thing that Ferrari will have to solve this season is their reliability issues, which the team were confident that they had solved over the winter break.

With Red Bull proving last season that they are phenomenally reliable and consistent, any potential challenger cannot afford to slip up or unnecessarily retire from races.

Ferrari will be hoping to forget the 2022 season as soon possible, as the team’s early title hopes were quickly extinguished after a flurry of tactical blunders.

The constant mistakes from the Scuderia staff led to the team choosing to make a change, replacing team principal Mattia Binotto with Alfa Romeo’s Fred Vasseur.

Understandably, Vasseur will be looking to shake things up behind the scenes at Ferrari, bringing in some of his own staff and reshuffling the current employees to his liking.

One man who is tipped to benefit from Vasseur’s arrival is Enrico Cardile, who currently works as the Scuderia’s head of chassis, having been with the team since 2005.

Rumours have suggested that Cardile will be promoted to the role of technical director to take some of the responsibility off of Vasseur’s shoulders as he embarks on his journey with the team.

The 47-year-old joined Ferrari initially as head of the technical area before earning promotions to aerodynamics manager, head of performance development and then head of chassis.

It has also been rumoured that Simon Resta could return to Ferrari to take up the technical director role, having departed for Haas ahead of the 2021 season where his success has been limited.

Another man that could be set for good news following the managerial change at Ferrari is Charles Leclerc, as his time working with the Frenchman at Sauber could pay dividends in 2023.

Vasseur typically prefers to operate with a set number one and two driver, meaning that Leclerc could become Ferrari’s favoured driver this year if the team do decide to adopt their new bosses approach and focus their energy on the Monegasque driver.

With Red Bull hindered by their cost cap breach penalty this year, Ferrari will be hoping that they can continue making strides forward under the new regulations and put together a more meaningful title charge next season, with their last title in 2008 getting further and further into the past.

Ferrari are reported to have tried out two different design concepts on their new car for 2022, and it appears that they have opted to go for a slightly bulkier chassis design than rivals Mercedes.

Formula 1’s technical regulations are dramatically changing ahead of the 2022 season, as a ground effect-led aerodynamic concept comes into play while the tyres increase in size.

This is being done in a bid to facilitate overtaking and closer racing – though it remains to be seen if the new regulations will succeed in this.

While we only really got to see the front of the F1-75 at the unveiling, Ferrari’s track day at Fiorano on Friday revealed two beam wings crossing underneath the rear wing to create a twin airflow, while 13 grill slot gaps on the sidepods – three off which are horizontal – are possibly in place to aid cooling.

The sharp abatement into a valley on the sidepods were also queried by ex-F1 car designer Gary Anderson, who believes that the “brave” design may well be detrimental to that.

Mercedes have gone for a much skinnier design than their Italian counterparts, and it has been reported by the Italian edition of Motorsport.com that this is originally what Enrico Cardile and David Sanchez, Ferrari’s designers, experimented with.

However, they suggest that the noises coming from Maranello indicate that Ferrari’s package – which is in part an attempt to ensure the reliability of their powerful engine – is “seven percent” more aerodynamically efficient than the design concept the Silver Arrows have gone for.

In truth, no one quite knows exactly which teams will master the new ground effect-led technical regulations, but we will shortly find out as the circus rolls into Barcelona for the first pre-season test this week.
