As widely expected, Williams have finally confirmed that they’ll be retaining Logan Sargeant for the 2024 season, despite a turbulent rookie season.

For the first time in Formula 1 history, all of the drivers who participated in the final round of the 2023 season will be on the grid at the 2024 season-opener, following Sargeant’s renewal.

Whilst it was expected that Sargeant would be retained for a sophomore campaign, it was far from a guarantee, given how much he struggled for the bulk of 2023.

He failed to out-qualify Alex Albon once during the recently completed season, whilst he also topped the leaderboard for total crash damage.

Williams had to fork out a staggering £3.4 million to repair Sargeant’s car following his series of crashes this year, a sum which is over four times his reported £820,000 salary.

Sargeant’s tendency to crash at most events this year certainly caused Williams a headache, given that the likes of Liam Lawson and 2023 Formula 2 Vice-Champion Frederik Vesti don’t have a racing seat for next year.

However, the historic side want to give the American driver more time, with him feeling incredibly “grateful” to be kept for another season.

“I am thrilled to be continuing with Williams Racing for the 2024 season,” Sargeant said.

“It has been an incredible journey with the team so far, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue developing as a driver within such a talented and dedicated group.

“We have exciting plans for the future, and I can’t wait to contribute to the team’s success in the coming year.”

Sargeant did show glimmers of promise towards the end of the 2023 season in particular, as he finished P10 at the United States Grand Prix and progressed all the way to Q3 at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Now that he has a full campaign under his belt, Sargeant’s confidence and ability should improve heading into 2024, which should correlate into better results.

Williams team principal James Vowles is “pleased” to have kept Sargeant and is certain that his performances will be better next year.

“I am pleased to continue our journey with Logan into the 2024 season,” Vowles said.

“Logan has demonstrated immense skill whilst under the pressure of the world stage, making him a perfect fit for our team.

“We have great confidence in his abilities and believe that together we can achieve even greater success in the upcoming season.”

According to RacingNews365.com, Sargeant earned just £820,000 in 2023, a miniscule amount compared to Max Verstappen, who was paid £40 million by Red Bull, excluding bonuses.

The Williams driver is actually the only member of the 2023 grid yet to be confirmed for 2024, as a result of team principal James Vowles wanting to take his time to make a decision.

Most expect the young driver to be given a second season to prove himself; however, Vowles has revealed that no matter what decision is reached, Sargeant will “always remain” as part of the Williams Academy.

“Whatever happens Logan has been part of the Williams Academy for many years, and will always remain a part of our academy, and he is a quick driver, but if we step away from that – if you look at the last five races on how he has improved and is stepping forward,” Vowles told F1 TV, as per Crash.net.

“You can see signs that what he is doing is what he needs to earn the seat, but we aren’t in a position to confirm that. We’re proud of the steps he has made this season.”

Sargeant did actually show very good pace in the closing rounds of 2023, with him having progressed to Q3 at the recent Las Vegas Grand Prix.

The American driver did also score a point at the United States Grand Prix, which helped Williams beat AlphaTauri to seventh in the Constructors’ Championship.

He just crashed too often during his debut campaign, something which is far from ideal for a team like Williams who don’t have the biggest of budgets.

Should Sargeant be retained, then he’ll need to cut out his habit of crashing at most events.

Ex-Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher believes that Mercedes Junior driver and Formula 2 star Frederik Vesti is being watched “closely” by Williams, with the German believing this is why Logan Sargeant hasn’t been given a new deal yet.

Sargeant is the only driver on the grid yet to be retained for 2024, with Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix currently set to be his last in F1.

Williams team principal James Vowles has stressed that he’s simply giving Sargeant the entire season before making a decision, although most are certain that the young American will be given a second chance in 2024.

Should Williams decide against keeping Sargeant, then Vesti appears to be the Grove-based team’s best option, after Mick Schumacher announced that he’ll be competing in the 2024 World Endurance Championship for Alpine.

This is the view of Michael Schumacher’s brother, who suspects that Vesti’s performance in the F2 finale at the Yas Marina Circuit will be monitored by Williams.

“In Las Vegas, I wondered why James Vowles had not yet signed Sargeant to Williams,” Schumacher told Sky Germany.

“This is probably because Frederik Vesti is on his wish list.

They are watching him closely in Abu Dhabi and may view his data in order to make a decision for next year.”

Vesti took the fight for the F2 title down to the final race of the season on Sunday against Theo Pourchaire, after he claimed victory in Saturday’s Sprint race.

The Mercedes Junior driver actually participated in Free Practice 1 for the Silver Arrows on Friday, where he replaced Lewis Hamilton.

Vesti is viewed very highly by the Brackley-based outfit and is known by Vowles, which is perhaps why there is speculation linking him to Williams.

After progressing to Q3 for the first time in his F1 career at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, it was back to normal service for Sargeant on Saturday, as he was eliminated in Q1.

He’ll start Sunday’s crucial race for him in P20 after he failed to set a legal lap-time, whilst Alex Albon managed to secure 14th on the grid.

It means that Albon has out-qualified Sargeant in every Grand Prix this season, in what is an unwanted statistic for the 22-year-old.

Earlier in the year, it looked like a no-brainer that he’d be dropped for 2024, especially after he crashed heavily in Q1 at the Japanese Grand Prix.

However, the young driver has improved considerably over recent races, with him having made his first Q3 appearance of his F1 career last weekend at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Sargeant is also now an F1 point scorer, after he finished P10 at his home race – the United States Grand Prix.

His pace has been much better in recent rounds, giving him hope that he can end his maiden season with a strong performance at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The young American is just trying his best to do a good job, with him currently not seeing “any issues” as to why he shouldn’t be given a second season by the Grove-based outfit.

“It’s a good question – honestly, I don’t know,” Sargeant said, as reported by F1i.com.

“But for me it’s just a case of taking it race by race. I feel like, from a driving point of view, everything has been getting much better in the past I don’t know however many rounds.

“I’m just trying to do my job to the best I can. And I think with how it’s been going recently, I don’t see any issues.”

Reflecting on his debut F1 campaign, Sargeant has labelled his Q3 appearance in Sin City as the highlight of his year.

“I able to finally put it together over three qualifying sessions,” Sargeant said. “[That] was really nice.

“Helped by the fact that we had a quick car in Vegas, for sure. But that was definitely very much the highlight.”

Williams’ rookie driver Logan Sargeant shares the sentiment expressed by his team boss, James Vowles, that additional preparation time would have contributed to a better debut Formula 1 season.

Sargeant’s performance in his first season has drawn attention to the necessity of sufficient testing and preparation for rookie drivers.

James Vowles, the head of the Williams team, acknowledges that Sargeant’s struggle during his debut season can partly be attributed to the limited testing mileage he was afforded.

Logan Sargeant is in alignment with Vowles’ analysis, emphasising the importance of adequate preparation for newcomers to the sport.

Many pundits and insiders in the Formula 1 community now concur that Williams is likely to extend Sargeant’s tenure to provide him with the necessary experience.

Sargeant expressed his views on the matter, noting, “The ideal would be to have more kilometres as it’s the best way to prepare.”

He highlighted that in the past, legendary drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso had the advantage of extensive testing opportunities in Formula 1.

However, the current landscape presents a different scenario, with limited testing time available to drivers.

The American driver acknowledged the significance of testing opportunities with modern Formula 1 cars.

He stated, “Now, whenever you test, it’s with a previous-generation car, and that makes a difference.

“But even if I had had more days in the winter with any car, it would have been better.”

Despite the challenges he has faced during his debut season, Sargeant remains confident in the support of his team.

Williams has chosen to delay the decision on Sargeant’s contract extension until after the 2023 season, underscoring their commitment to his development.

Sargeant expressed his gratitude for the team’s support, saying, “They know what happens behind the scenes, and they want me to be successful.

“The team supports me, so I don’t care what the rest say.”

He recognises that experience is a valuable asset in Formula 1 but also believes in his ability to adapt and improve.

The young American driver is determined to learn from his experiences and eliminate the minor mistakes that have characterised his debut season.

He added, “Experience always helps, but I have people to talk to as I try to adjust the way I approach each situation to put an end to the small mistakes I’m making.”

Williams has provided assurance that both of their drivers, Logan Sargeant and Alex Albon, have been cleared after facing health challenges during the Qatar Grand Prix.

While tire management was a significant concern throughout the race weekend due to the demanding track conditions in Qatar, it was the drivers themselves who bore the brunt of the gruelling, muggy night race at the Lusail International Circuit.

Logan Sargeant reached a critical point where he had to retire due to feeling extremely unwell during the race.

He had initially resisted retiring the car but ultimately succumbed to the debilitating effects of his condition as he returned to the Williams garage.

Sargeant was visibly unwell as he slowly exited the Williams cockpit and was promptly taken to the medical centre.

Williams confirmed that he suffered from “intense dehydration” and that the illness he had experienced earlier in the week had exacerbated his condition.

Fortunately, he was assessed and cleared by the medical team on-site.

“Following Logan’s retirement from the Grand Prix, he has been assessed and cleared by the medical team on-site after suffering from intense dehydration during the race, weakened by having flu-like symptoms earlier in the week,” the team stated.

It was also noted by Sky F1’s pit-lane reporter, Ted Kravitz, that Alex Albon had not been seen in the media pen post-race.

Williams provided further details by revealing that Albon had been transported to the medical centre for treatment due to “acute heat exposure.”

Thankfully, he too was cleared by the medical team.

“Following the Qatar GP, Alex was taken to the medical center to be treated for acute heat exposure,” Williams confirmed.

“He has now been assessed and cleared by the medical team.”

Despite their health challenges, Alex Albon finished in 13th place, contributing to the Williams team’s efforts.

Both drivers will now enter a recovery phase as they prepare for their next outing at the United States Grand Prix, scheduled to take place at the Circuit of the Americas from October 20th to 22nd.

Esteban Ocon revealed that he had vomited inside his helmet during the race, while Lance Stroll admitted to experiencing “blurry” vision in the closing laps.

Race-winner Max Verstappen characterised the extreme temperatures, which exceeded 30 degrees Celsius, as “just too extreme.”

Reflecting on his ordeal, George Russell expressed, “It was an absolutely brutal race, by far the most physical I have ever experienced.

“I felt close to fainting.

“I felt ill during this race.

“It was insane how hot it was.

“It was like you were inside an oven.

“I sometimes train in saunas, and you push your body to the limit, and you get to a point where it’s too hot, and you’re like, ‘I want to get out.’

“That was the feeling from about lap 12.

“There were points when I thought I was going to faint.

“It was unbelievable.”

Looking ahead to the next year’s Qatar Grand Prix, Russell noted that it is scheduled to take place six weeks later, potentially offering cooler conditions for the drivers.

Remarkably, despite his challenging start following a first-lap collision with his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, George Russell managed an impressive recovery to finish fourth.

Hamilton accepted responsibility for the incident and issued an apology to Russell, who emphasised their mutual respect and the intention to move past the incident.

“We both had the possibility of standing on the podium,” Russell told Sky.

“Obviously, there was nothing intentional, both ways.

“These cars are so difficult to see when you’re racing.

Williams Racing has decided to postpone its decision on the future of American rookie Logan Sargeant until the end of this year.

The team is meticulously assessing whether Sargeant’s debut season has seen the required progression to warrant another year behind the wheel.

Despite showcasing glimpses of impressive speed during his rookie campaign, Sargeant has yet to earn a single championship point and has encountered a series of unfortunate accidents along the way.

However, team principal James Vowles remains unwavering in his support for the young talent, reaffirming the possibility of their continued partnership in the upcoming season.

Following another incident at the Japanese Grand Prix, Vowles clarified that there was no hurry to make a decision and emphasised affording Sargeant ample opportunities to demonstrate his capabilities.

Vowles stated, “I suspect it’ll be to the end of the season.

“I think we’ve already committed to the direction of travel we’re in.

“He has targets to hit, and it’d be wrong to go against that decision point.

“So end of the year.”

Vowles underlined the team’s willingness to exercise patience with Sargeant, citing the potential that the young driver has displayed.

Williams Racing believes that Sargeant’s primary challenge lies in maintaining consistency and delivering complete race weekends.

Vowles explained, “The pace is there.

“That’s the thing that we wouldn’t be able to fix or repair.

“But what happens is, when it comes down to the crunch time, there are elements of inconsistency that creep in, and in the form of that, goes into an accident sometimes.”

The team is dedicated to helping Sargeant progress and refine his performance, considering their responsibility to nurture rookie drivers.

Despite the limited testing mileage, Williams aims for continuous improvement and consistency to yield favorable results.

Vowles also pinpointed a specific moment in Sargeant’s F1 journey that may have inadvertently contributed to his challenges.

During the Bahrain Grand Prix, Sargeant impressively matched Lando Norris’ qualifying time in Q1. However, he failed to advance to Q2 due to Norris setting his lap time earlier.

READ: Charles Leclerc says Ferrari made the right call firing Mattia Binotto

Vowles believes that this initial success may have given Sargeant a false sense of security, making it more challenging to handle subsequent difficulties.

“Probably the worst thing that can happen [was] he went into Bahrain and overlapped with Lando in terms of Q1,” said Vowles.

“He thought perhaps the challenge in front of him may not be as significant as it really is.”

Williams driver Alex Albon has highlighted the distinct nature of his partnership with teammate Logan Sargeant compared to his experiences with teammates during his time at Red Bull Racing.

The British-Thai racer, who initially made a quick rise to the Formula 1 grid, now finds himself in a role where he mentors and guides his younger teammate.

In his early Formula 1 days, Albon made an impressive debut with AlphaTauri, which led to a mid-season promotion to the main Red Bull team.

He spent 18 months alongside Max Verstappen but struggled to make a significant impact.

After a season out of the sport, Albon returned with Williams and has since demonstrated considerable improvement, evolving into a strong and competitive driver.

At Williams, Albon has embraced the role of a senior driver and is actively involved in helping Sargeant, an F1 rookie, adapt to the sport.

When asked about whether his interactions with past Red Bull teammates influenced his approach to working with Sargeant, Albon provided insights into his evolving dynamics within different teams.

Albon explained, “You know, when I think about it, not too much, no.

“I would say when I think about my rookie year…

“I’m thinking about my teammate compared to how I am.

“It’s a little bit different.”

He went on to elaborate on his experiences with previous teammates in the Red Bull program.

“When I think of myself against Danny [Daniil Kvyat] and Max…

“Especially with Danny, obviously, we were much more rivals in a way that we were both in the junior team and we wanted to beat each other.

“That’s the environment you had at the time in Toro Rosso.

“We still got on very well. But there was not much advice or anything like that because, at the end of the day, we are truly competing against each other.”

Albon emphasised that his focus during his time at Red Bull was primarily on adapting to the car and improving his performance rather than seeking guidance from his experienced teammate.

He stated, “With Max, it was more just trying to get up to speed.

“Understanding the car was my kind of primary focus.

“But I wasn’t asking Max questions like, ‘How do you drive this thing?'”

In contrast to Red Bull’s high-pressure environment, Albon noted that there is more patience at Williams, which allows for a different dynamic between him and Sargeant.

The American rookie is still seeking his first point after 16 race weekends.

“I think with Logan, we’re in a position, which is slightly different to both my times, where, you know, we’ve got a car that we need to improve, and there’s a clear path that we want to be on,” explained Albon.

“So, generally speaking, we are both very open because we’re not really in the same kind of competition against each other.

“The way I see it is we’re fighting against the teams around us, so the dialogue is very open.”

READ: Max Verstappen branded ‘ahead of the car’

Albon highlighted the collaborative nature of their relationship, as both drivers work together to find solutions that enhance the car’s performance and competitiveness.

He emphasised their shared goal of moving up the grid and competing in the upper echelons of qualifying sessions.

“In that sense, there is always going to be a slight difference,” concluded Albon, underscoring the constructive teamwork between him and Sargeant at Williams.

This unfortunate turn of events marked the 15th Formula 1 race in Sargeant’s career where he left a grand prix weekend without earning any points.

With rumours circulating that his rookie seat is in jeopardy, reports suggest that Felipe Drugovich is in discussions with the team, while Liam Lawson and Mick Schumacher are also potential contenders.

For now, Williams is maintaining faith in their American rookie, and Team Principal James Vowles has stated that Sargeant has until the end of the season to “prove” himself.

Offering a vote of confidence in Sargeant’s abilities, Dave Robson acknowledged that the crashes have garnered the most attention, but they should not overshadow his overall performance.

Robson stated, “I guess inevitably they catch the headlines, don’t they, and they’re obviously visible.

“I think it had kind of masked his steady performance, and this weekend was actually going really well.”

Robson continued to praise Sargeant’s performance, particularly at the challenging Suzuka circuit.

“It is such a difficult circuit to come to and find the lap time, and we he went about it really well on Friday, built on that yesterday, and then to lose it in the very last corner on the first lap,” Robson explained.

“It was quite a minor mistake, it’s just at that corner, once you touch the grass, you’re in a whole heap of trouble.

“It’s a real shame but I think it is fair that the crashes, since Zandvoort, have masked what has clearly been some steady improvement.”

However, Sargeant’s crashes have not only affected his performance but have also taken a toll on the Williams team, as they were forced to replace numerous parts following his qualifying incident, resulting in a penalty for effectively running a third car.

Robson outlined the extensive repairs, saying, “Almost everything.

Essentially a spare power unit, previously used one, so no additional penalties. Spare gearbox, same thing, a previously used one.”

Despite these challenges, Robson expressed confidence that the team would manage their resources effectively.

“We’ve got enough parts around us, it just becomes a bit of a logistical exercise; how many do we want to actually ship on the circuit; what do we send on to the next; what do we send back to the UK.”

With six races remaining in the season, Williams currently sits seventh in the Constructors’ Championship with 21 points, all contributed by Alex Albon.
