At the time of writing this (January 23), it marks exactly seven years since Bernie Ecclestone was replaced as CEO of Formula 1, ending a significant era in the sport.

Ecclestone was dismissed by the current owners of the sport Liberty Media, in what was a forced exit following their takeover of the pinnacle of single-seater motorsport.

There is no doubting that the sport has changed drastically since Ecclestone departed, having spent four decades in the CEO position.

It was Ecclestone who made F1 the global phenomenon and financial success that it is today, with Liberty Media having simply pushed on from the pillars that the 93-year-old planted.

His time as F1’s CEO wasn’t without its controversy, with 2008 having been a dark year in particular.

The 2008 Singapore Grand Prix is where the infamous Crashgate took place, a blatant case of manipulation by Renault which Ecclestone admitted last year he was aware about at the time but refused to say anything to protect the sport.

He also clashed with Lewis Hamilton on multiple occasions, prior to being replaced by Chase Carey.

Upon his departure, Ecclestone was given the the title of “Chairman Emeritus” and revealed that he was “proud” of the “business” he’d built.

“I’m proud of the business that I built over the last 40 years and all that I have achieved with Formula 1,” Ecclestone said at the time.

“I would like to thank all of the promoters, teams, sponsors and television companies that I have worked with.

“I’m very pleased that the business has been acquired by Liberty and that it intends to invest in the future of F1.”

Since Ecclestone’s exit, a eight-episode docu-series has been made about him, with it having been produced by the same genius behind ‘Senna’, Manish Pandey.

Available on Discovery+, it takes a deep look into how Ecclestone grew F1 and all the controversies that he navigated along the way.

From various tax cases to having briefcases full of cash, the docu-series goes into it all and is a must-watch for anyone interested in the history Ecclestone and also F1.

1996 Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill has demonstrated his full support for McLaren CEO Zak Brown, who has called for the sport to “stand up for independence”.

Red Bull are the only company on the F1 grid that own more than one team, something Brown believes impacts “the impartiality between competitors”.

The Milton Keynes-based company recently expressed their intention of working closer with their sister team, who are set to undergo an imminent rebranding.

Even AlphaTauri has stressed that they will be working closer with Red Bull this year but in accordance with the current regulations.

Brown wants common ownership to be scrapped in the championship, as it can do “obvious potential damage” to the competition.

The McLaren CEO is standing up “for independence, competition and fairness”, with him calling for the regulations to be changed at the next Concorde Agreement to stop one team influencing the decisions made by another.

“As we look ahead to negotiating the next Concorde Agreement to unite the governing body with the teams and commercial rights holders, we should prioritise some of those rules that currently impact the impartiality between competitors,” Brown wrote, as reported by The Mirror.

“For example, most other major sports prohibit the ownership of two teams within the same league because of the obvious potential damage that it does to competition. It’s an unhealthy situation because it impacts decisions made both on and off the track. Whether it’s a case of having access to more data, sharing components/personnel, or even having influence over a strategic vote, it’s not in the spirit of the regulations.

“It’s important to stand up for independence, competition and fairness. I’d like to see changes in the regulations to ensure that in future, they stop influence spreading from one team to another through strategic alliances and especially through ownership. Formula 1 should be true to its brand, and every team – except power units – should be totally independent of each other.

“I believe Formula 1 fans universally believe in fairness in competition and a level playing field, and would reject any actions that compromise the true spirit of competition within Formula 1. Part sharing of information, shared ownership models, and strategic alliances within the sporting fabric of Formula 1 will only serve to undermine the fans’ belief in fair and fierce competition.”

So far, Hill is the only person to vocally support Brown’s statement, with the Sky Sports F1 pundit taking to Instagram to demonstrate his support.

Hill wrote on Instagram that he “agrees 100 per cent” with Brown who thinks each team “should be totally independent”.

Mercedes technical director James Allison has quashed suggestions that Lewis Hamilton is no longer motivated to push to the limit, with him insisting that there’s “no doubt” about the 39-year-old’s desire to win.

Hamilton has failed to claim a race win in over two years, with his most recent victory still being the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

The seven-time World Champion had been the only driver in the history of the sport to win in every season they’d competed in, although this feat was destroyed in 2022.

2022 was a woeful year for Hamilton who finished behind teammate George Russell; however, the 103-time race winner was more like his usual self last year.

Hamilton claimed third in the 2023 Drivers’ Championship and finished comfortably ahead of Russell.

Whilst this is an improvement for the veteran, he’d likely take a race win over finishing ahead of Russell in the standings.

In his defence, the Silver Arrows haven’t given him a car good enough to win races, as proven by the fact that the German manufacturer have only featured on the top step of the podium once since the current regulations were introduced – Russell won the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s winless streak has made many ponder if he still has what it takes, as far as Allison is aware, he does.

Allison recognises though, that the statistical greatest of all-time needs better equipment than Mercedes has given him the last two seasons to succeed.

“I think you’d struggle to find a driver anywhere in the grid that wasn’t motivated,” said Allison, as per The Mirror.

“I think that sort of comes with the territory with them. And, generally speaking, the more successful the drivers have been, the more sort of inescapable that compulsive need to win is.

“In Lewis’s case, it’s just a core part of who he is, so there’s no doubt about his motivation to get back to winning ways. But whether or not he can do that will be much more in the hands of the equipment we’ve given him than in his own hands. He’s always had that ability there.”
